On 10 June 1944, the village of Oradour-sur-Glane in Haute-Vienne in Nazi-occupied France was destroyed, when 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a German Waffen-SS company. (Wikipedia) De Gaulle made the decision to leave the destroyed village as a war memorial .. Very haunting when you read the entire story.. A new village was built in the 1950's adjacent to the site.. These were all shot with a Nikon A900.

This is the interior of the village church all the women and children of the village were sealed within the church and killed with hand gernades and gasoline..

Sad, I saw several villages in this same condition in Germany as well but did not have the tragic and horrible story of this one.

I once saw a documentary about this - it was horrifying to see the actual footage - the Nazi habit of filming their actions was truly evil. The documentary stated that only two or three people escaped the massacre. I'm so glad the French government has seen fit to preserve the ruins to remind people of what really happened - history cannot be revised when a silent witness like this still survives. Thank you for sharing these images.

Thank you for the reminder of the atrocities committed by the Nazis. It makes my blood boil when I see people now days praising them and what they stood for.
