I have a Canon 70D and interested in the Canon lens if I can locate a used one and can afford it. Alternately, I understand Sigma Contemporary 1000-400 might be an option. So, looking for input/advice also.
I like to hike and although was initially looking at the 150-600 Sigma Contemporary... pretty sure that is going to be too heavy and big for me to enjoy, since I like to move around alot.

P.S. FYI... I wanted to simply search the classifieds, but had no idea how to get there. It is not listed at the top of the page. If someone can give me direction on that, also appreciated.
Go to the top of the page click on home when that opens up, scroll down through topic until you see buy sell trade. The buy sell trade . The 150-600 is a beast to carry. I am a huge guy with very big hands and carry it rarely and have places to rest it on. There are cheaper 100-400 options and sigma and Tamron are doing some excellent work.
Go to the bottom of the page and click on "All Sections". Scroll down until you see the "Buy/Sell" forum.
Christine - I sent you a private message.
Thank you! I guess I didn't scroll far enough the first time. Too bad the link can't be at the top. :)
Yes, been reviewing the Sigma Contemporary and will review the Tamron 100-400... hopefully will understand some of the spec differences.
Pro on Sigma Contemporary... sharp thru full zoom, and can do macro shooting... Con is no lens tripod mount (but I thought with the lighter lens, the camera tripod mount could support.) Maybe not?
Pro on Tamron... Sort of "Pro"... I have a 16-300 and been fairly happy with it, as an all purpose lens, although sometimes wish it were a bit sharper at 300. ... I haven't dug into the reviews on this 100-400 lens yet, but did hear it has a lens tripod mount. Not sure about Cons... but someone said something to me about it being a "dog" but not sure what they really meant... slow focus??
P.S. is there a search function in the Classifieds?

Try to find one on Craigslist. Buy the Canon if you can afford it. It's the best zoom lens in that range made for Canon.

Used lenses exist, but you can get a new one at a discount on GreenToe. Used it to get my Canon 100-400 II, new, full warranty, and the money I shelled out came out $300 less than retail and no tax and free shipping. An odd system but it worked beautifully.
Whatever you get, you will want a harness to hike around with the big lens you are getting.
Thanks for the great input
😊
Thanks. Will definitely check them out.
You can find a lot of discussion of this topic here:
https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-568756-1.htmlOther good sources for used gear include KEH.com, B&H Photo, Adorama. Canon USA also sells refurbished gear direct from their website.
You won't find many of the Sigma or Tamron 100-400s on the used market yet. They were only introduced in the last 6 or 9 months.
There aren't a lot of used Canon 100-400 II, either. There are a lot more of the first "push/pull" zoom version, probably people selling them to upgrade to the II.
