This may not be true in cultures that write from right to left, such as Hebrew and Arabic.

You might want to look at my earlier post (on page 9) where I discuss that very issue.

Right on! Normally it works best to have more room in front of a person, but in this instance the story seems to be about leaving the dock at the end of day, in which case the subject is more the empty dock than the person. The story IMHO should direct the composition at least as much as some frequently touted "rules".

One last example. Unfortunately, once I flipped the photograph, I did not save the original, but as you see, I think it "makes sense" as presented. It seems more "pleasing" to me that this fisherwoman is exiting "stage right."

Motion from left to right is more pleasing. While I usually leave more space in the direction being traveled (when shooting photos of runners since the story is about where they are going) here the story is about where she is coming from. Very nice composition when flipped.

Thank you. It just felt right to flip the photograph. I agree that left to right is more pleasing. This photograph felt "awkward" before it was flipped around.

Thanks for your comment. This is another reason (not that I consciously thought it) for flipping the photograph. The "story" calls for it.

Ultimately that seems to be the difference between a snap shot and a good photograph. Good photographs tell stories. Like yours.
