It is almost a defining characteristic of both groups. Barry Goldwater was a noted radio amateur who would always simply introduce himself as "Hi. I'm Barry, K7UGA" to other amateurs, whether they realized who he was or not. He actively sought out and participated in amateur group activities. One railroad group that I am a member of includes a well known actor, very high level business executives, and others whose background would surprise you if you could learn about them. But at our gatherings, they are simply nonassuming, approachable, interesting folks like (hopefully) the rest of the folks there sharing a common interest, many of whom are from much more modest backgrounds. There are, of course, a few exceptions, but by and large those are the outliers.
