Just a few shots taken in the last two days. Hope you enjoy some of them. The pelicans were just resting and stretching. I have no idea why there was a bubble floating along the edge of the bay...but it didn't pop and I liked the simplicity of the shot. Avocets are always elegant. The two hawks were 2 of 3 Red-Shouldered hawks I saw at Irvine Regional Park yesterday afternoon. I though this shot of them was interesting. I saw several Hermit Thrushes in Spanish Pepper trees, but I could never get a full body shot. The African Collared-Dove was a first sighting for me, and I was luck to get a nice full body shot. The Raven stood confidently in his tree while I took his portrait. The cormorants in this shot are only a part of the flotilla I saw, all swimming in the same direction across the pond. Finally, the peacock is just such a colorful individual, I though I'd include him. Thanks for taking the time to view these. Hope you found something you liked.

All nice shots. The Raven looks a bit bedraggled. Looks like the Red Shouldered hawk is mantling his kill. Never seen that done in a tree before

Thanks for the compliment. You may be right, but I caught this shot just as the hawk was finishing a landing in a snag of branches. I suspect it is just a matter of timing. As for the Raven, he didn’t seem bedraggled when I took the shot. I think the bedragglement is just a strange angle that caught the long flight feathers behind the bird. I don’t really know.

Those are great photos, jak. The first one makes me smile, those silly pelicans! Also, the cormorants. As for the dove, could it be the Eurasian Collared Dove? I saw my first ones only a year or two ago and they are becoming more common in this area. As for the Thrush, we occasionally see one right out the kitchen window, up close, but it is gone too quick for a photo. Very secretive.

Hi Katy,

Thanks for viewing and writing. Yes, the African Collared Dove is a subspecies of the Eurasian Collared Dove, I believe. Others have reported seeing them, but this was the first I’ve seen. It was with a group of Mourning Doves. As for the Thrush, there were several in the same tree, but I could never get that clear shot. It’s nice to hear from you. Glad I could make you smile.

I think that hawk has a mouse or other rodent. I can see a tail.

Roxie, yes, you are correct. I didn’t see it until I downloaded the pictures to my computer and enlarged this exposure. It’s a beautiful bird, which is why I enlarged that section. That’s when I saw the rodent. It was taken from about 100 yards away. Thanks for looking and for commenting.

Nice shots but what part of the country were these taken in so we might be able to identify some of these birds?
