The plot thickens. If you want my comparison between X and Y then you get only my thoughts which may or may not work for you. The best advice I can offer is to create a small book in X and then try the same book in Y. This will tell you the real story that is suited for you. My needs are not the same as yours. Note that I said small book so you're not wasting time on a huge project. Try it with about 6 or 8 pages. Everyone here has an opinion on everything but none can suit your needs as well as your own.

Yes we all have different needs. I don't expect you to speak for me. I was just looking for people's opinions on their experiences. Nothing more to say.

I have a couple of Adoramas pic books. I think 8x8. Fine for what they are. Devent paper.
Not coffee table quality. But as good as my photos , some were even photos of old Polaroids. But thats the pics I had of my kids...

Thanks for your response. I am trying to determine if it is worth the amount of money. I would like to sell the books.

The OP asked if I had any ideas and I did answer the question with a couple (of ideas). They then asked for a more specific elaboration and I answered again. Asking specific questions will result in specific answers. Asking broad generic questions is a waste of time. I fail to see how one person can answer with "Oh it's the greatest" and another answers with "Oh it sucks" can help anyone make an informed decision. If this makes me an a$$...e then so be it.

I am not familiar with the company but I would offer one thing that I have learned. Before you spend all your time trying to get published, spend time working on your marketing plan. I have a friend that has a room full of his works and does not have the sales channels or is not willing to pay for them and regrets the decision to publish.

Thanks so much for your input. You are right. This is where I am falling short. I have to research this. I know nothing about marketing.

You are not asking about Blurb? Perhaps you have answered those questions? I have only used Blurb for photo book production and have been very happy with the quality. One of the things that will make any photo book look professional is the way you set the book up in the software, assuming that you are doing that. Blurb, using Lightroom Book Module, allows me to produce very professional looking books that can be sold on Blurb.

If you want a book with text and photos, rather than a photo book with a few lines of text, you might consider AmazonKDP, their book self-publishing site. You can, however, add pages of text in LR Book Module.

In the end, most of the publishers do a good job, it just depends on what you have in mind. You can see my books on Blurb to get an idea, http://www.blurb.com/user/cassinetto?profile_preview=true. If the link does not work just search my name, connie cassinetto. My books are all the large, coffee-table size with many full-size photos and some bleeds.

Good luck.

Every now and then, Shutterfly offers "unlimited pages," meaning you can create a book of any length for the price of the 20-page minimum. Using this option, I've put together several one-off books for something like $27 each. Only problem is that these free offers are of short duration -- only a few days -- so you have to have everything ready and organized so you can work fast.

As long as you just want a few copies for personal use this should suffice. If you're thinking of self publishing a book to sell to the masses, FORGET IT! You'll spend a whole lot of money and get almost nothing in return. A literary-minded friend of mine tried that route with a book of essays, spent between four and five thousand dollars, sold less than a dozen copies, and bitterly regretted his decision. If you can't interest a publisher to follow the conventional route, odds are the book's not worth publishing by any means.

And even conventional publishing's no road to wealth. Years ago, I wrote three well-reviewed photo books published by Amphoto and apart from the advances ($1,500 and $4,000) I got royalty payments in "the mid two figures." If I'd spent the time I spent writing those books sitting on the sidewalk outside the publisher's Times Square office building with a tin cup, I'd have made more money and met a better class of people. Your time's better spent scrawling graffiti on men's room walls.

One who knows. -- SG
