For me its purely an ego thing. But when I do sign a photo it's allways subtle. Painters sign their work so why shouldn't I sign mine

You post an image here, Instagram or FB with a watermark and somebody steals it, often as simple as saving to the photo app on their phone. Later they crop out your watermark and use the image in an advertising promotion. The minute you post an image in any form of "recognizable media" you have a defacto copyright per the US Copyright Office. It is hard to argue ignorance of stealing your intellectual property of they took the time to crop out your identifying watermark. And, the penalties for modifying an image without permission of the content creator are greater than simply unauthorized use.

Catching someone stealing and using your image to make money is often difficult or near impossible. Someone half way around the world could be selling prints of your image at an art show this very moment! Or your image could be used as an illustration in some random book you have never seen or heard about. And chances are slim you will ever find out about it.

That’s perfect! I couldn’t even see your watermark on your beautiful pictures. Yes painters sign their paintings but Never across the whole painting!

I’m not a pro! I’ve always wondered why some photographers put large watermarks on their beautiful photos. Like a name stretching over the photo on the bottom! It draws your attention to the name on the photo and completely distracts from the photo in my opinion. Sometimes looks like an ego thing to me. I understand copy guarding your photos but it can be done much more subtly. Any thoughts and does this annoy anyone else?

You are correct - ego . . . and insecurity. Also, not catering to their buying public by putting way too much time and effort into thwarting those that have no interest in buying anything from them. Lots of missed opportunities. And for what?

Hell yes it annoys me to.i thought that uhh was supposed to be amateurs and some pros who want to help some of us amateurs get better but it seems like some pros want some free advertising.

I do it to put ownership to it that everybody can see outright. I do it as a freelance who sells images to somewhat protect it and at least make it a little work to remove the mark.

I am featured on a regular basis in a bi-monthly state magazine also for name recognition as they print my name by each photo and again I watermark for the same reason. I am trying to build a brand.

But most of all I am proud of my work and put my stamp on it. It is hard work to sell and one has to explore all avenues to build an appreciating audience. So my watermark is like any logo.

All television has a watermark in the corner but I never see anyone complain about it being distracting. Because I use a watermark, it does not mean I am a pro. Nor do I place it to annoy or distract. I place it because I have higher goals I have not yet reached in my photography.

To each his own I guess. Yes, subtle is far better in my opinion, rather than some giant blob right in the middle of a photo. I personally do not use one, for the most part (having tried it but soon quit). If someone steals a shot of mine, I guess I would just be flattered. The chances of finding out about it, slim to none.
