Exporting from LR to External Hard Drives

Good afternoon,
Can you please direct me on how to properly and efficiently export from LR to an external, hard drive? I shoot in RAW and from time to time I blow them up into prints.
Currently, I am dumping them into the external hard drives via Apple's Photos. I am open for your suggestion and ideas, with the notion of retrieving photos in the same way that LR and Photo works.
I export from LR, as catalogues and into Photos, as Events.
Please let me know if there is a better way. I'm sure this topic has come up a few hundred times.

If you are already using LR 'export' then all you need to do is change the folder to export to to the one on your external drive.
