I have two SD cards which I use in my trail camera. One is a 16 GB SD card and the other is an 8 GB micro SD card which I insert into an adapter which has the same demensions as the SC card. I usually carry them in my shirt pocket and alternate them daily when I visit my trail camera. Recently I forgot to remove them from my shirt pocket when I changed shirts. Subsequently my wife washed the shirt, without removing cards, in our automatice clothes washing machine.
Later I found and removed the cards and adapter from the washing machine. Although they appeared to be undamaged, I assumed they had probably been internally compromised by their immersion during the washing cycle. However, without much hope of success, I inserted them into my computer and to my delight found that they were still completely functional.
Although I do not recommend washing memory cards, I do recommend that you check them out before you discard them in the event you accidently immerse them.
Happy Holidays
Most better SD cards are waterproof for several hours if not longer. Not a reason to get them soaked but good to know.
Thank you, that's good to know.
Yes, SD cards are very durable. Cameras have floated in the ocean for years and yielded perfect pictures.
They do get dirty perhaps we should wash them once in a while?
Good for you! BUT! I would back them up immediately. Exposure to the washing machine may well shorten card life significantly. Indeed, I would never trust them again for any thing important.

I call that water formatting. Had it happen more than once. One time even a CF card with no apparent damage. Still, I wouldn't recommend it
So happy that you didn't lose any photos. Thanks for the post...love a great ending!

I have 1 card that has been washed and high heat dried twice already and have worked fine (now kept in glovebox for emergencies)
I think your wife needs a better washing machine.
I don't have any idea how many times my SD cards, compact flash, and even expensive XQD cards have been washed and dried. I have only had two failures in 14 years and neither of those got washed and dried. (Perhaps I should have washed and dried them.)

Jodi Arias was convicted of first degree murder, in AZ, partly based on washed SD cards being recovered from a washing machine
Add me to the list of oops people who have stored a CF and SD card in my jeans pocket and went thru wash and dry cycle. Yes, they survived
