We are going out to Monument Valley next month and want to take the photographers tour. It can be split up so you take morning and early afternoon, early afternoon and evening, or they could do early morning and evening. Has anyone taken any of these, and if so, how was it and what would you recommend? Thanks

Just make sure you're not in an open buggy type of thing, which is what they carry people around in on the regular tour.

Shoot early morning.. not too much dust in the air, or heat fog.

I agree with Fotostan..early morning is good, and bring something to protect your gear from the dust. A plastic bag will do. Enjoy!! It's beautiful.

Hello Allen, I spend a lot of time in Monument Valley, Several times a month. If your going to use one of the tour companies take the early morning tour to the totem poles, request a visit to Susie Yazzie's Hogan after your sunrise shoot. If you want to do a evening shoot have them bring you to the Tear Drop. How many days will you be there?

Bruce

Bruce your shots are all outstanding. However they are not shots available to the normal photographer. I believe that they are all preplaned shots with models.
I'm I right or wrong?
The bottom line is that they are great but the person going on a tour will not be able to get anything close to yours.
The last time I saw Susie she was in a dark teepee by herself.

Bruce, we are planning on being at the View motel 2 nights, and taking Navajo Spirit Tours, but have not locked in to anyone yet. We just want to experience the area, and will also be doing Antelope Canyon and taking a photographers tour there as well. Any suggestions you can make for us will be greatly appreciated. Allen

You will love Antelope Canyon. Just be ready when you get there--have proper lens On and what ever you do don't plan on changes lens. The dust in there is so fine you will never get it out of the body. You have to go into the canyon with a indian tour. You can't go in by yourselves.

Thank you Philo--the only image you couldn't get would be the first one. I'm friends with Susie and Effie. I took this image for the daughter Effie. She never had a portrait of her and her Mom. The one with the sheep you could do if you planned it in advance. Effie would charge $200.00 to do a sheep run. The last one is Susie in her Hogan. After the Totem Poll sunrise you could request a visit with Susie. I consider myself very blessed to have the Yazzie's as my friends. I was the only white person invited to her 98th birthday in April. If you search the web it shows an image of Susie reading the AZ Highway Mag. I did it as a joke for AZ Highway. I didn't even know it was posted until a couple weeks ago. They do have her age wrong.

Philo is right about the dust going to and in Antelope. I use one of the rainsleeve's you can purchase on line. It only needs to be one of the inexpensive ones. The sleeves come two in a bag. You may consider Secrete Canyon in Page as well. It's less crowded and you can take your time doing it. You may want to call some of the outfitters in Page to see if they have offer tours to Secrete Canyon. Coming into Page there is a place called Little Cut that is a very nice sunrise shot, also Horseshoe Bend is another beautiful more destination.

The View is a very nice place to stay. Coondog's second image was taken on the right had side of the View. You don't have to go to far to get nice images. You can drive the loop road yourself it's about 10 miles. You don't need a guide for that. If you have any other questions you can call my cell today or tomorrow and I'll do my best to answer them. 928-713-9870

Thanks for the warnings about dust. I didn't think of that. We are planning to do a tour from Denver to Las Vegas that goes through Monument Valley and stays at the View Hotel next year. We are not driving but found this tour that overnights within the National Parks so hopefully I'll be able to get some good early morning and evening shots. It all looks amazing.

Hi Allen,

Since you are staying at the the View Hotel, I recommend their guide, I can't remember his last name but his first name is Tom. He does an early morning photography guide tour. As for Antelope Canyon. I recommend the Canyon X / Antelope Canyon tours out of Page, Arizona. If you like you can check out my images at www.robeng.smugmug.com. Have fun and take some great pictures.
