Why would my Nikon D5200 suddenly not recognise that my AF-S Nikkor 50 mm 1.8 G. is attached?? It is telling me no lens attached when it is? No problem with my other 2 lenses and I've used this prime lens many times before. On the LCD the f-stop indicator or aperture is closed with F--- and the indicator flashes no lens attached. Any ideas?

Sorry, I have used this exact same lens on my Nikon D3300 and have not had any issues as you have described. Maybe a defective lens?

The lens said something offensive to the camera so the camera put the lens on the ignore list?

Actually contacts no communicating. Try cleaning and examine for any damage.

Try a pencil eraser to gently clean the contacts on the lens and the camera body. If you can adjust the focus ring with the lens off the camera do that also. If your other lenses are working you most likely have light corrosion somewhere that is keeping the camera from seeing the lens. Do you have a friend with a Nikon who can try the lens and see if it works on another camera? If you have a local camera shop see if they can offer suggestions.
Good luck

Rick

When that happened to me on a trip to Oregon, I went to the Canon camera shop, the camera person said that I should carry an eraser with me like the one on the end of a pencil and rub it gently over the contacts. Once I did that it works fine. That is about the lowest Tech, lowest cost solution that I started with and it actually worked! Hope this helps!!

Never, never use a pencil eraser on the gold contacts. The gold on the contacts is only a few molecules thick and you will wear it off quickly. Gold does not tarnish but it can get dirty. Wipe them off with some alcohol on a cloth. They do make contact cleaner but alcohol does the job

Clean the contacts on the 50 with lens cleaning cloth. Rub um real good. Their are tiny springs behind each pin, if one of these does not push the pin up with enough pressure it will not make contact in the camera. By rubbing a lens cloth over these pins you may activate one of the pins that needs to pop up. Also, another common problem is not locking the lens in place, after my lenses snap in, I try to move the lens back and forth to make sure it is locked in. You would be surprised at how many people do not do this.

Will a Q-tip swab dipped in alcohol, then squeeze excess moisture from Q-TIP before attempting any cleaning of camera contacts?

I would think alcohol would be worse than an eraser.

I've used the eraser trick on lenses, but not on the camera body. Afraid of ending up with a bigger problem ( eraser junk on my sensor). Just my thoughts. Good luck!

I am 100% in agreement with this. I use a contact cleaner made by TMC.

Alcohol is not a solvent for metals. No risk.
