Thanks Rick. I tried it with a square crop, but found that I preferred Stan's suggestion for a vertical crop of #1.

Thank you Linda for your thoughts. You always seem to have good ideas. I am not sure, however, what you mean by centering in a rectangular aspect. It that the same as Stan's suggestion to change the aspect ratio to a vertical?
Sorry, that wasn't very clear As posted, the flower is equal distance from left and right. So my question is what made you decide to present that way? For many, it is more out of habit. But if you really like how looks, that's great; I was just curious about how you decided.

I suspect you are right about the choice being more out of habit than for any other reason. After moving the flower more to the left and changing the aspect ratio to have more veticality I like it better. Thanks again for your insight.

I would think about the context in which it will be displayed. The cut off aspect might work to emphasize the color if it appeared next to a similarly cropped flower in red. Or a grouping with a red and white flower.

I think the cropped version is much more interesting and the bud with it does not bother me. I like the fact that some of the petal tips are not shown. The larger size of the second one has more impact.

No. 2 looks more appealing to me and it would be even better if all the petals were visible.
By the way, a simple Curves adjustment will improve this image considerably.

Thank you camerapapi. Can you be more specific about the curves adjustment?

RR, both are nice pictures, but I think the crop on the second image is just a bit too tight and loses the striking effect it deserves. I took a similar photo of another, also yellow but larger, blossom and just nicked a little point of a petal. That was the only criticism I got, and on post-contest re-PP, it turned out to be another blossom behind my subject that I thought was fully hidden.

Both are very nice photos...but I like the detail in the cropped version and the perspective is visually pleasing and informative.

To much dead space in the 1st image. In the 2nd image you filled the frame. Much more pleasant to view.

Thanks guys. What I ended up with after so many good suggestions was a combination of the two photos. I cropped the first image differently, and I think it has most of the good qualities of both images.

#2 grabbed my eye immediately. It's a different way of looking at a flower, not just the same old shot from the most common perspective, no matter how artfully composed and exposed and focused. It shows me something in a way that I don't usually see. The cropped off pedals are unimportant because the viewers mind fills in the missing pieces. That's my opinion. Other opinions about your posting shows that others have different opinions.
There is no consensus in this highly subjective field of endeavor. You are the creator, thus the question is "What do you like?"
