I would doubt the nature of the images had much bearing on the firing. I would think that getting caught playing around with personal business on company time had a lot more to do with it! Sounds like your "friend" is playing you for a little sympathy to me and not quite relating the entire story here.

Totally AGREE! I can't speak for other companies, but at Intel, there is NEVER one single incidence that leads to termination for improper use of company property---it's usually a long documented case of abuse.

Gee, if we had so much extra time at work somebody on the staff would be laid off. No wonder corporate America is going broke manage your people, keep them busy and they won't have time to play. Honest 8 hours and I want at least 80 % productivity. With lap tops being so small, iPads, iPhones why would you need to use the work computer?

That goes for company email addresses. No need to use the company server unless your email belongs to the company. Seems like common sense to me but time and again you see people using a university or even government server for their private mail.

I personally know of a young man who worked for F......y and signed a agreement/contact that he would not use their company issued laptop for anything personal. A violation is immediate dismissal. Without his knowledge, while he was out, his wife used his company laptop to edit her resume. When it came time for him to get a new laptop, he turned in his old one to IT and proceded to begin to use the new one. The very next day he was called to his manager's office where he was terminated and escorted from the building. TRUE story !!

My sentiments exactly,I saw the pics from the camera card pre pp I thought they were pretty benign certainly not lewd but I'm pretty broad minded as far as that goes. So I guess I agree with the IT company policy violation. I just can't under stand a "crime" I saw a posting here once where a whole camera club got shirts made that said " photography is not a crime" because of some people shooting at some type of emergency scene were hassled by guards or police it was a while back mb someone saw it.

It's called theft of services and it can be a crime if charges are pressed. This covers using employers time (when you are on the clock) to your own bennefit.

When I see 90 degree tilt screen I think, what is this?
When I see Sony Memory Stick ProDuo I am gone.

It is called looking for a excuse to get rid of an employee, or an excuse to reduce the number of employees. It has nothing to do with theft of service, It does not cost the company anything extra. Certainly the IT people have something better to do than check what is on a computer they are cleaning up.
