Give him the job of researching on which camera that is best for him. He is 14 he is old enough to do his own research. I spent almost 2 years researching before I bought my first camera when I was 20 and bought my camera when I was 22. It's interesting to research about things that I like I hope it's the same for your son.
The reason I recommend this than taking a recommendation from someone else. If I were you as a father and I bought my son something because I like it's bad enough. Buying him something because someone else recommend that I don't know anything about is bad in my opnion.

Depending on the situation, if it is intended as a Christmas gift, at 14 having your father surprising you with something you really want could be more important than what specific brand or model is in the box. With the relaxed return policies this time of year the additional research, if needed, can be done later.

great advice thank you i think thats the best way to go. thanks again
Take him to a local camera store so he can handle them. A Nikon 3xxx or 5xxx, Canon Rebel would be a good places to start. It sounds like you’re making him part of the process which is a good thing!
sorry was not able to find the 3xxx or 5xxx on line .

He meant the Nikon D3300, D3400 and D3500 as well as the Nikon D5500 and D5600 and I believe all of which are still available new.
I agree that Mike should do his own research first. In order to become an informed researcher/consumer, Mike will first need to study a few basic concepts. On-line videos; introductory photography course at his school or community college; join a local photography club; etc. Allowing Mike to make his own decision will help ensure that it will be a better fit....and will increase the likelihood that he will continue with his new hobby.

Welcome, Mike. Right now you can get a refurbished Canon T6 with an 18-55mm and 75-300 lens for under $400. Refurbs by Canon are reconditioned to like new status and come with a 1-year warranty. Many of us here on UHH buy refurbs so dont be afraid to consider them.

I spend quite a bit of time with kids. Capturing video is very important to most of them. Their lives tend to be much more dynamic than static. As you are looking, I'd suggest making sure that whatever camera you select is capable of decent video. Even if his interest in still photography fades for a while, the capability to capture video will keep him interested in the camera and might protect your expenditure.
I agree that the user should try out cameras, but I would buy used or refurbished. Try B+H, KEH, Adorama etc. I buy used for myself.

Why not surprise him with an early Xmas gift card from a camera store or maybe Best Buy, where he can fit himself with something he is comfortable with? Take advantage of these latest deals?

Sam's Club offers the Canon T6 and T6i with two lenses at very good prices--the T6 kit was on sale for about $400 recently. There are also similar kits from Nikon at good prices. I suspect Costco has the same kind of deals. Any of those kits would be an excellent beginning for your son.
