My biggest pet hate on this is more to do with the 'nutrition' info on the packaging. The little boxes of Raisonettes and stuff you get at the movies (the only size they sell...) have very reasonable amounts of carbs, etc. listed. Then, if you look at the top of the info, it lists the box as 2.4 portions! What kind of nonsense is that???

When I worked for Kraft/Nabisco they had a policy "If the customer is satisfied with 60% quality then that is what we give them we are in business to make money not quality", I hated that statement.

Geeze!!! Nasty way to run a business.

That even extends to bird seed. When I questioned the reduction from 25 to 22 pounds (in the same size bag) the store manager explained this "was due to customer preference" because, apparently, 25 pounds was too heavy to carry. "Then why did the price remain the same?" I asked.

The manager mumbled something about "headquarters setting the price" and walked away.

Haha. Wait until the package gets down to 12 lbs and then the marketers come out with the "New 25 lb bag"....

I just Googled "five-pound bag of sugar. This is what I got. It weighs only four pounds.

This is just a mild complaint.

Several years ago, I noticed that the Breyer's "half gallon" of ice cream was no longer a half gallon. It was three pints, rather than four. That's a significant difference. They did this, of course, to avoid making the price seem too high. The same thing has happened with almost all other products, from tuna fish to coffee to candy bars. Milton Hershey varied the size of his candy bars because he wanted to keep that five-cent price, regardless of the price of chocolate. Eventually, he stabilized the size, and raised the price.

I usually buy Stewart's ice cream because I get a full half gallon. Yesterday, I got Turkey Hill, and I was surprised at how fast it went. When manufacturers reduce the amount in the package, the price reduction is a false savings, and you miss out on part of the quantity. Figuring price per pint, you can actually pay more for less ice cream.

There. I'm done. Happy Thanksgiving!

Well, Jerry, you opened up a can of worms on this observation. (It's now 10oz, not 12oz can) lol
Speaking of Breyers Ice Cream. Years ago, I used to occasionally buy a half gallon and then the size got reduced and then the price went up. I stopped buying it altogether. It was, hands down, the best tasting ice cream around. Something happened over a period of time. They must have changed the recipe somewhat. It sure doesn't taste good anymore. It's downright lousy. Nowadays, I prefer Hillshire Farm Premium. It;s pretty darn good and the package is larger than Breyers.

I picked up on that when they came up with the space saver container which took all the corners off. Now their trying to make bacon in 14 and 12 oz packs. Just won't buy them and a pound of coffee or package is 12 oz. just refuse to bye it.

Stupid nonsense!
(Then some advertise a LOW amount of calories per serving on stuff.
Check the portion size on the package, TWO cookies....... RIGHT!)

Easy-peasy! Just whip more air into it, or cut back on the quality of the ingredients. Just like opinions regarding photo gear on UHH, some go for quality and others go for price. Usually, these are mutually exclusive concepts.

One thing that entered my mind when I saw all this happening (which I, too, first noticed with ice cream)
was the fact that now the container companies will be making more containers - bags, cans, boxes, etc -
so the same quantities of produce can be sold/purchased.

The prediction among economists is that with the Trump Tariff War on China we can expect prices to stay about the same for most consumer goods...for a while...but that repackaging to reduce quantities/sizes will accelerate. Where there is already a minimum size as with, say inner tubes, the price will go up. Just last week at Lowes I bought an inner tube for a particular sized tire for about $25. The identical tube 2 weeks before cost only $6. A little bit of anticipatory price gouging going on there I suspect. More to come. Hold onto your used inner tubes, etc.

They've done the same to sugar, 4 lbs. now instead of 5. They started raising the prices when the price of oil went bonkers and puzzlingly the prices NEVER dropped after the price of oil went back down. And of course, the drop in amount packaged per product didn't go back up either. Whether they're politicians or producers, they universally treat us like mushrooms kept in the dark and fed horse puckies.
