Although there is some question as to the origin of this beautiful melody, Mario Lanza gives it the vocal justice it deserves.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8Ex9epoVP4The popular version is that it was written in tribute to the British soldiers who fought in WWI. Also in tribute to the marvelous non-military folks who worked in factories producing military goods for the troops, and civilians (families and loved ones) who supported the troops, I'm reminded of Churchill's remark: "They also serve who only stand and wait!"

Churchill may have used the phrase, but it is from the poem On His Blindness by John Milton, a 17th century poet.
Kenneth McKellar also sang this song beautifully.
