Forewarned is forearmed - if your shipment is important to you, instruct that it be held at a pickup center or UPS store and pick it up from there. Since most shipments (but not all) are FOB origin, if it had been ruined or stolen, it would have been my responsibility to file a claim with UPS and deal with this. I guess I should be thankful that it was placed in a plastic bag...

UPS has gone to hell in the last few years. Prices up, service quality down. The last time I went to a UPS store, they wanted $36 to ship a small package that the post office shipped for $7.00. It's USPS or FedEx for me.

A few months ago, UPS left a large, flat package that they *should have delivered two doors down,* on the driveway right outside my garage door. I, of course, hopped in my car with the garage door down, then hit the remote for the opener, and backed out... crushing a piece of unassembled furniture. I called UPS. They called the neighbor. The neighbor had to come get it from me, file a claim, and return it for replacement. What stupidity! Fortunately, my neighbors thought the whole incident was annoying, but laughable. They didn't blame me, because they back out of their garage the same way.

I’m with you. We have a great mail delivery guy who I know well (and I remember every Christmas), but there’s no continuity in Raleigh with UPS (or FedX) delivery personnel, so no opportunity to develop a relationship, even though we’ve lived at the same address for decades. Some delivery guys are great, and some apparently not so much.

I think service quality really IS up to the driver, no matter what service you use. For several months after we moved to High Point, we kept getting some mail addressed to our neighbors, and they got some of ours. I called the local postmaster and complained every time. Finally, they had enough complaints that they fired that driver. Problem solved. But they had the same problem three years later. It makes us wonder if they test the reading skills of the delivery folks...

I would take that photo to the UPS distribution center, ask for a manager or supervisor and demand an explanation. To not do so is to subject the next customer to that idiot's stupid and lazy way of delivering. I read the other day that there are now more jobs available in America than there are people to fill them. UPS jobs pay a lot more than working at some retailers or fast food places so maybe that driver needs to fill one of those jobs and open up the higher paying UPS driving job to someone that will do the job correctly!

Yeah, I had a similar experience a few years back, a UPS driver left the package ( worth $2500) outside a bar, because he knew that I used to go there quite often. He said nothing to anybody, just dropped the package somewhere on the outside and left. A friend of mine happened to see the package and saw my name on it, so he brought it to me! Anybody could have picked it up and left with it!

You can go online with UPS and "register" with them and tell them EXACTLY where you want your packages delivered. For example, I requested that my packages are left by my back door, which is closer to my rural 600 foot driveway than my front door, and undercover. Once I registered, 97% of the drivers complied, and most of my problems stopped. Now, 99% of any problems that I have will occur between now and the end of the end of the year because of substitute (wildcard) drivers. FedEx here leaves it outside in the rain and snow too. Ups here always leaves it in the porch.

Here is my "Second Nickle", or three on the subject. If you live in a rural area like me, your UPS package will frequently be delivered by your local Post Office. This means that my local Postman has to drive up my 600 foot drive and place a package, too large for my mailbox, on my front porch and get the signature when required. Why you may ask? When UPS doesn't have the volume of deliveries to make a profit they will "Farm Out" their deliveries to the USPS and still make a profit. Congress now has this under investigation, big Whoop! The last time I compared UPS/USPS rates I now go USPS to save $$ and for the convenience.

Here's a hypothetical question. What if UPS delivers a package without getting a required signature, and leave it someplace it could have been stolen. So you pick it up, and then tell them you didn't get it?

You have had a bad experience with UPS so everyone at UHH is supposed to shun them!? You have told only a part of the story, the bad part. I have absolutely no problem with you turning your back on UPS, it's your right to do so. But I know few of the facts, only what you shared. Was there a reason for why the UPS delivery person delivered your package in this manner? Are there circumstances were UPS will drop off a signature required delivery without the required signature?
I've personally never had the slightest problem with UPS, ever. But we live in different parts of the country and UPS may do things differently around here. I certainly hope you have better luck with future deliveries.

My wife is so mad at UPS if the worthless, lazy delivery driver gets within eye sight of her I cannot imagine what she would do to him. The last five delivers to our house have been left 250' from our front door at our mailbox. We have called all five times and complained but to no avail. It is bad enough that thieves have stolen packages off front porches but to leave them 250' away at the road side is beyond belief.

Here’s the postscript to the story. The merchandise from the package left in the rain (a wedding present for a wedding tomorrow) was ruined by the rain. The sendor (thankfully) was willing to resend the package UPS overnight. Been tracking the package all day - “out for delivery”. Then, a few minutes ago, it was shown at delivered at 1:45 PM (it wasn’t). Called UPS who checked and says it wasn’t delivered and still on the truck, but no way to get it, and they don’t deliver on Saturday - maddening - the driver either lied, or the system failed, the package is here, within miles from my house, but no way to get to it until Monday (or considering the “professionalism” so far, they will return it as “unable to deliver”). One mistake is understandable, but an outright lie the second time around and no effort to address the problem, which is time sensitive, is unforgivable. I will never use them again and specify that all shipments to me use a different carrier. Grrrrr. End of rant.

Nope, nowhere have I suggested that anyone shun them, and there is no other side of this story (maybe yours, but not mine). Actually, if you read my post again, it wasn’t so much to bash UPS (I’ve read similar stories about FedX and USPS) as to suggest to other users that if you’re ordering valuable items, you might consider picking them up at a UPS store or UPS office, avoiding the problem.

I apologize for the gross misinterpretation on my part. I have read so many postings dissing UPS and FedEx that they all bleed together in my mind. I absolutely agree with using the UPS store for pick up. I have done this on more than one occasion. Years ago I had a PO box and a package I ordered worth $3500 was shipped via UPS to my PO box instead of my billing address. Since UPS doesn't, or at least didn't then, deliver to the post office, I'm curious why they even accepted the package. Anyway, I looked up the tracking number and immediately saw the mistake and called the retailer. They said they would contact UPS. I then called UPS and informed them of the same problem. Long story shorter, UPS tracked the package to a specific truck it had actually made it onto for delivery but would have ended up going back. The driver was instructed to drop it off at the UPS store closest to the shipping address. UPS contacted me when the package was delivered. They were actually very helpful.
I did ask a question in my original response about signature required deliveries. Under what circumstance may they deliver without a signature?
Like I previously said, I wish you better service in future deliveries.

Again, I have never had any problems at all with UPS. My front yard is fenced in and packages are always left at the front door.
I know nothing about your driveway or how easily a UPS delivery truck may navigate it. I don't know what UPS policy is on driving on private property. As has been mentioned, have packages sent to the UPS store so you may pick up on your schedule.

I have a "drop & run" UPS driver; on top of the BBQ, on the patio chair, in the swing, on top of fence post, etc.!!

It's all in where you live, some services are good, some services are bad. In my case, I live way back in the woods on an old dirt logging road, which has at least been graded a bit over the last 45 years I've lived here. Road can be so bad in winter most people won't even come to visit. Yet I've never had any problem with either UPS or FedEx. I can usually hear their truck coming up the hill about 3 or 4 hundred feet before they reach my house. This gives me time to get outside and meet them coming up the driveway, so I can collect my package. By them "coming up the driveway" I mean they are walking up it to deliver the package, not driving up, it as most of their trucks can't get up the driveway in winter. Someone is almost always home so there is little issue with them leaving anything, they either deliver it hand to hand, or leave a delivery attempted notice. On the other hand, the USPS has the worst record. The slightest bit of snow or icy weather and they won't even try to get up our road, you can see by the tracks in the snow that they just turned around at the bottom of the hill rather than attempt to come up. Just no mail delivery on those days. And when they do come up, they seldom deliver packages, instead just throw them on the side of the road across from our driveway. I read about other people indicating they get lousy service from UPS and FedEx, I guess I'm lucky that I don't have that problem.
