If you were to purchase a comapact camera for best image quality and manual controls, which of these would you pic?
1) Panasonic DMC-GF3
2) Fujifilm FinePix X10
3) Nikon Coolpix P7100
4) Canon G-12
5) Other (disclose what camera)

All panasonic cameras are noisy, so that leaves that out. X10 far to expensive for my taste, and limited. P7100 is second to the G12. So I guess it would have to be the G12. Not because I own one, but because I did all the research before I bought one. :)

The Oly Pen, would not even be in question here. No camera with interchangeable lenses, can be considered a compact in a general sense of the word. To much extra! baggage to get the same lens options, not to mention the expense.
Which ever compact you go with make sure it is water proof , that expands it's use a 100x's personal i go with a pentax apio
Sony RX-100, awesome camera. 12 frames sec, 1 inch sensor, in camera HDR that can be used hand held, fast focus. Too many features to list.
I would pick the P7100 or the G12.

Yes your quite right...ignore me i had more of the question of best image quality in mind. :-)
Jerryc41 gave an excellent reply on another post he said"
The good news is that if you buy a name brand P&S in the $200 range you can't go wrong. You will not get junk. It seems that the higher the price, the less shutter lag. Reviews should give you specs on the lag - both start-up and shooting. Look at the specs and features, and decide what's important to you. Then compare the ones that meet your criteria and make a decision.
Buying refurbished from the manufacturer's web site can get you a good deal".

Of the ones listed I would choose the G-12. Personally I use an Olympus VR-340 or VG-120 when size is an issue. Good results for small price and easy carry-along ANYWHERE!
G12.
Apart from the image quality, a tilting screen and a viewfinder.
Luxury!
As Jerry suggested go to snapsort (
http://www.snapsort.com) and then go in to a shop with a test target and do hands on for feel and then go home and check out how the shots look. If you do not go out and bark at the full moon, then high ISO is low on the list of priorities. Define your photo life style, needs, budget etc before chosing... do not dump the decision on others... your money and as General Schwartzkopf said about Iraq, "...you'll live with it for a long time."
Caution... some of the comparison of photos testing are showing fine differences that in normal display modes will never be seen. Balance budget and needs make decisions, and never look back... till it is time to get the $100 24 meg pix 10 years from now... as I have often said... hurry and buy cause if you don't the technology will get better and the price will go down.
Depending on your budget. Sony NEX line is a great way to go. Same size sensor as the SLR (APC). Check out the specs. Fantastic. With a adaptor you can fit any Canon, Nikon, Sigma or Tamron lens, to it. Thinking myself to change over to the Sony Nex7 and forget all my Canon SLR's, and have fun.
Canon G12. Did the research too and own the camera. You won't be disappointed.
