Hi, Ian,
Sometimes when the muse fades y’just gotta let her go and either take a break of a specified duration... or put yourself on a ONE SHOT a day (or week...depending on your decision of duration). My bet is that within a week or two, one shot simply won’t be enough! That’s when you sign back into UHH with “I’m baaaack!”.

You joined us last April and have posted some commendable photographic art!
Your name is memorable to me (I have an old friend - Ian Koehler) ...so I have some specific recollections of your early morning images and conn3cted his name with them.Really liked them.

My dad got me started with photography (he was a technical and promotional writer for Eastman) in 1948. I can’t recall how many periods of “dried out inspiration” Ihave had...but none lasted very long; new ideas and approaches always seemed to come up to “pull me back in again” in the words of Luco Brazzi.

Best regards,

Hope to see more of your work ...d3finitely sooner than later!

Dave

Ian - we are all on your side. And we are all waiting for another picture post. Do us all a solid and give it another go. If you are feeling down then take a picture that conveys that emotion so we can all "see" what you are coping with - then a contrasting photo to offset that emotion and post both here. I love photos that pull on the emotional strings. Or if you just need to talk - drop me a message - but don't give up. Never give up.

Just wanted to say hello to you guys …. let you know that tho I have been here for a while and I have posted some work and commented on others, I have basically given up on getting my camera in my hands.
I enjoy coming here and looking at the wonderful examples of creativity, but I just don't feel ANY confidence in my own work any more.
So I guess I am saying... keep posting folks... I enjoy looking.

Talk to us, please. What’s really going on? The images youkve posted here previously are excellent.

Nice pics you posted in your post A New Day" in August, especially the center one of the houses.

ermmmm no physical disability.... more like an intense disappointment with my results when I do photograph something. I am not really sure why. I feel like I am looking for something that is extraordinary, but I have no idea how to get to that "road". I don't really want to give up. The artist is in me.... I can feel it. But I also feel like I am sitting here in my den, paints in hand with a black white canvas and no $^&^ idea what to paint. Interpretation: open camera bag, get out camera, stare at it for 5 minutes, and put it away again. :)

Maybe I have become WAY too self critical.... maybe I am burned out right now? The answer just isn't here right now.

Hey I agree with “old timer”... Your photos are fantastic and you have seemed to master quite a bit! I read one post that got me thinking about this post. You love astronomy so maybe look into doing some astrophotography?? I personally find it intriguing! I think based on the knowledge you already have you would be quite successful!

Sounds familiar. I, too, experienced that (and still do most of the time). Doctor diagnosed depression. Since cause is external, there's not much I can do about it. Your telling about getting the camera out and looking at it - then putting it away without using it is spot on. I've got a brand new D7000 with the 18-140mm lens. It's a great combo and I should be using it. I hear the same voices telling me I'm never going to produce the level of work I see presented here or in the Nat Geo and similar sites - so why bother! It's frustrating. Since I have no control over the things that are putting me in a depressive state of mind, I do nothing. Suggest you see your doctor about your problems. He may be able to help.

My feeling as well. I am quietly following this thread and saw your (OP's) photos. Nothing to be ashamed
of.
About twenty years ago a beloved girlfriend left me after 16 years of relationship. That has crashed
me and I left my guitars and singing for a way too long time. I had to move to my parents' house
and rediscovered the pleasures of playing and singing. Brought all my guitars back to life and along
with a friend who played bass, my father and brother on percussion, my mom on keyboards and, boy,
we sang for hours and hours.
We took photos (a lot), and to a certain extent, did fine. But unfortunately my level of stress has raised
so much that I felt I needed to move on and went back to my home town. Worked at clinics on some
kind of "sub-employments" for a couple of years. To cut it short, I ended up coming back because I
met a woman and we are together ever since. Our son has excelled his guitar teacher (me) and is
16 now, playing and singing while I write this. There are no bad times that will ever last nor good times
that will last forever. Be Well.

The Critics Section at my house is my Immediate Family. It’s a big deal when I get a good review. And they help me to improve my photos. In the meantime it is my hobby and I need to satisfy myself with my results. It gives me the desire to get better and try new approaches. Most of all ENJOY!!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Don't give up!

Listen- I've been shooting for over 50 years- I still do it for a living! I am a full time "professional" but believe me there are many occasions when I don't like what I have produced. I have to work on deadlines and there are times when I deliver the job and can't understand why the customer liked it and happily wrote the check...and came back for more- I wished I coud have done it over!

So here's my tack for remedying what I call "photographer's regret" or "shooters block" (it's like writer's block).

My wife says that I sometimes break things just so I can fix them. It's fun! I like fixing things. So when I end up with a lousy shot - way below par, I get my fun out of troubleshooting and fixing things. So...get another look at the images you dislike. First of all, they may be better that you think- "absence makes the heart grow fonder". If you still don't like them- don't use them for kindling for a photography fire or get down on yourself. Analyze what you dislike and get on it. Perhaps you are sick and tired of the same old subject matter so try something new. I'm not for encouraging a GAS attack but maybe a new piece of gear will get you back in the groove. Make a image or a portrait and gift it to someone you care about. Their reaction will rekindle you interest. Teach someone photography- I always find that stimulating- they ask question that makes me revisit stuff I have forgotten about!

A skill or talent allowed to waste away is a terrible thing- don't let that happen! My grandmother used to admonish my reluctance to eat properly and go to school on time. She used to say "kids are starving all over the world and have no proper education- appreciate what you have"! I'm sure there are folks out there who would give their eye-teeth to shoot like you. Don't let it die!

Be well- kindest regards!
