For those who watch American Pickers it is a surprise to see how they find so many old bicycles.
This girl's bike was in a store window in Whitehall, New York that had closed down some years ago.
The sight of that set of wheels reminded me going down a hill in the town where I grew up.
It was raining and this once section was paved with cobble stones that were worn smooth.
With passing traffic adding a bit of oil and grease to the stones it made it more like riding on
ice than on stone. One thing was paramount to know. Do not hit the brakes very hard
or the landing would cost more than you wanted to pay. Riding friends on the handle bars.
Going up and down dirt trails that ran along the railroad. And remembering where you
kept your pant legs to keep them out of the chain. Sprockets, spokes, chains, bearings,
and the ever popular trading cards and clothes pins on the wheels to make it sound like
the bike had a motor came back to me as I took the photograph. Was it all really that long ago?
The baseball cards are the one thing I wish I had back, the mid 50!s was the best time to ride a bike
