Faststone is great for a free program. Irfanview is also free.

I'm trying to find an editor similar to the Apple iPhoto. The editor that comes with OSX.

Don't want to get into Photoshop, but want to be able to Sharpen, control Highlights, Shadows, Color, Contrast, Intensity, Redeye, etc.
Photoshop is a little too involved, and expensive for my needs. Looked at Gimp, too involved.

Is there anything out there?
Although I recently acquired a new Editing program, I still haven’t set it up (for totally unrelated reasons,) thus I cannot fully endorse it ... yet.

Specifically, if you want one with channel swapping capability, such as for Infrared Photography, consider Luminar by Skylum.

If you want free, why are you not using the software that came with your camera?

I keep GIMP installed and concentrate on learning one thing at a time. Sharpening was the first, and it worked great. Paint.NET has good features and is also free. I use Irfanview frequently for various tasks. You don't have to use just one program to edit a photo. Photoshop Express has simple controls that are good enough for many people. There are free tutorials out there for every program. Here's a YouTube video showing a few choices. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-X3r3QkvjI8

I have used Zoner Photo Studio for many years and it would be what you are after, you can try it free for 30 days to see if you like it.

Fastone Viewer gets my vote for cheap (free), extensive and simple to use editing. I have lightroom and photoshop but probably 60+% of my editing is done with FSviewer - a brilliant free program with well implemented and easy to use editing functions, and a single menu. Just need to persuade FS to imlpement on Android :)

I use LR / PS mainly when I need RAW processing / layers/ fancy selection etc. FSviewer will process most RAW (although not the new canon CR3 yet) but doesn't have the same flexibility as a program costing £100+ per year! (there's a surprise :)

You can also use the free app that should have come on your computer if it is equipped with Windows 10 called simply, Photos. It does virtually everything you mentioned wanting.

I second that. I have photoshop and about 6 other editors, but for just adjustments, Photos is good. Also it crops...

Check out Paint Shop Pro, a bit easier than Adobe to learn, does everything as far as I can see.

I strongly second above. Quite admirable free and splendid program. Do not even think twice.

Do you want good results or quick and dirty?

The thing you don't want because it is too expensive will work best for you and give you all the options you want, and at $120/yr very competitively priced. If you want free, and are willing to put up with stuff that doesn't work all that well and is hard to control, and requires a lot of time to master, then there is a boatload of mediocre software titles out there that will cost you nothing out of pocket, but will consume your free time as you fiddle around with this and that setting, keeping you from taking pictures.

I'd rather minimize my time in front of the computer and go shooting. And yes, I use those software titles you are trying to avoid, along with DXO PhotoLab, Capture One, On1, and a few other specialized programs. But I am a bit fussy about image quality and can't be bothered with the free stuff.

Corel's Paintshop Pro will do what you want and is modestly priced, especially if you are content with an older edition from eBay.

I would try to find an old copy of Aperture. Apple does not support. I don't know if any one can send it to you legally as it is no longer supported.

Photos is a free app included in Win 10. It may not be as comprehensive as iPhoto, but it does some simple adjusting. I 2nd the FastStone suggestion. Google Photos is also free. Photoshop Elements has three levels (Quick, Guided & Expert). You may try any or all of the Adobe products for a 30 day free trial. https://www.adobe.com/downloads.html

Good luck!

I’ve used a couple of iterations of Photoshop Elements and am happy with it. Around $70 or a bit more with video editing included. On sale now from Adobe. It has Quick, Guided, and Expert editing modes to get you going. If you get into RAW editing and buy a newer camera, you may have to upgrade to a newer version of Elements in order for its ACR editor to be compatible with what your new camera produces.

I have been using Luminar. I really like it except it lacks a DAM component. This is supposed to be corrected on December and will be free for current owners. Their support is great with lots of free videos and live workshops. It is a stand alone/plug in editor with presets which are adjustable. I also use Paint Shop Pro by Corel another good program
