Like them all, except for the skeleton in the wagon.

Bankrupt, and then the jars as #2.

Jars for me. Also think tweaking the color to be reflected more on the jars. Good luck and what a great opportunity to evaluate your art with fellow students. Let us know what happens.

You are totally correct, this also is true of most competition judges, they give top marks largely by what types of images they like as opposed judging equally across all types.

As an aside, I wonder whether your instructor has or would give you, an operational definition of EXACTLY what is being evaluated for your grade. Images are subjective....as evidenced by the varying opinions given here. I find each of your images pleasing....but for different reasons. If there is no "metric" being applied to evaluate your work....I would suggest this is simply malpractice....as is quite typical amongst University professors. As a professor, I would be much more interested in hosting a round-table open discussion of each image (by each student)....and I would listen more to the quality of critical thinking (articulation, communication, depth/breadth) going on between each participant, than to the quality of the images themselves.

A better learning tool might be to have been given a well-developed rubric....showing the different levels of "goodness" and WHY (clearly defined and with measurable criteria). IMHO, too often an instructor says, "go off and do good things" without ever CLEARLY defining what a good thing looks (acts, smells, tastes, or feels) like. This happens in schools, at all levels, across the country....every single day. That's no way to teach and it certainly is no way to learn!

Only a well-defined standard can be measured. PS: Don't tell your instructor any of this or you will reap the wrath of the "full professor" with tenure.

The professor is great. All semester long we had sharply defined projects that challenged me to and beyond my limits. I’ve gotten a 95% or better grade on all of them. So those pictures make up the bulk of the 10 piece portfolio we have to prepare for the final (half our grade). For the rest we are free to showcase our talent. The limiting factor is that each image had to be taken during the semester. Most of the choices were a no-brainer that included a National Geographic Editors Favorite and other award winners. When I got down to my very last choice I got hung up. The consensus seems to be “Went Bankrup,” so I’m going with that. Thanks for taking so much time to respond.

I like the jars, also like the lack of saturated color in the photo!

Definitely do not use Dragon or Long Ride. It is tough for me to choose between the remaining three.

#2 will be the best choice. The Dragon is someone else's art work.

I like the bikes as a graphic, but the jars as a soft color palette. I guess your choice will be what your portfolio needs, to show all your diversity. Good luck. Bev

Thinking out loud: For me, it's between the bikes and the jars. I would have preferred a tighter shot and/or a crop of some of the cabinet plus some color enhancement as the jars contain quite a bit of color that your now missing.

Agree on comment on jars: a tighter crop. In a shot like this the revel is in the details. In the jars, in the wood grain.

For me, I would go with photo #1 for color. I do not see any of your photos showing "light".

No worries, the total portfolio is full of light and color. I’ll report back on my grade next month, but at mid-term it was 98.3%.

I suppose a tighter crop and a touch more saturation could improve the image?
