Canon 24-105 f4L MkI Red Ring Broke
While I was placing my lens in my camera bag, I noticed the red ring moved and was surprised. Upon closer inspection the ring is actually broken. Any suggestions for repair or replacement? Thanks, Gary
If, as I suspect, it is only there to make the lens look good and has no effect on the lens's function or weather sealing, why repair it? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Trim???
Hope so, no problem then.

The red ring is a trim piece. It rides directly against the focus ring and may act as a spacer to prevent the ring from moving forward, although, I doubt it. The focus ring is most likely restrained internally. If it is only broken in one place I wouldn't worry about it. If a chunk is missing then you might want to be concerned about dirt getting in under the focus ring. If missing completely both dirt and possible focus ring movement would be concerns.
If you decide it needs repair your best bet, IMO, would be to send it to Canon.
In any event I would call Canon service directly.

Great opportunity to trade it in and get the second generation.:)
Thank you Peter. I realize it has not function other than to distinguish an L from a non-L lens, but it is keeping my equipment in good condition, similar to maintenance to you car. Gary

Thank you JR. I am considering calling Canon. Gary
Thank you Bill. I purchased used from a fellow Hog and only have $450 in it. It works and functions great, does have the lens creep, but other than the red ring seems perfectly fine. I will have to consider my options. Gary
If the "red ring" represents a "high end" lens, I would consider not having it a "camouflage".

Mine also left me, as they dry up and crack after a few years. they have no effect on the lens, it is for letting someone know you are a Canon 'L' user.

I would send it in for an estimate. Most likely way less to fix than buy new lens.
I have never heard of one failing but if hit just right I guess so.
I would not leave it as is though for personal reason that it might cause another failure by not being tight or who knows what.
If all else is just fine again should be a relatively cheap fix way below a new lens and odds are the lens will be refurbished by Canon while in the shop and for me that would be well worth the cost.

Same thing happened to me. Small drop of super glue fixed.
