Confused over which lens(s)

OK, so i am buying a 5D MkIII

Now the question of optics

I am not a portait/people photographer..apart from the odd candid type shot. Historically I tend to be either motor sport/ wildlife/ night exposures, time exposure type sots

I dropped out of SLR photography when I got fed up of carrying around a bag of fixed lenses and all the kit. So it has to be a zoom, or two at the most.

My thoughts at the moment are:
'kit' 24-105' L series and a 100-400 L series,
or
the 28-300 L series as as single lens.

With the kit lens I have a 'small ' every day lens, with reasonable range but have to carry the bigger 100-400

but with the 28-300 I have only one lens, but it is bigger and not so much an 'every day all purpose lens..just because of its size.

Thoughts please...or other lens suggestions

24 - 105 and the 100 - 400? I don't think it can get any better than that. I own the 25 - 105 L and it is wonderful.

If you are only carrying 2 zooms , the 70-200 2.8 ll would be the superior lens on the telephoto end and my first choice of two lenses. Stick to the L lenses of the wide zooms.

I have the Canon 5DII and the combination of the 24-105 and the 70-200 mentioned earlier is ideal. I've shot all over the world and have rarely felt a need for anything else.

Yes, the 70-200 was also on my list due its faster max f stop, but the 400 appealed too

I suppose a 70-200 with a x2 convertor is the othet way to go

Yes, lovely place, but I never get time locally..always too much on. my only real time is when I am away on vacation, so tend to choose holidays on wild life or scenic merits as much as anything

I know what you mean. I live in a vacation area - hiking, fishing, swimming, skiing - yet I have to get away for a vacation. On the weekends, the City (NYC) people come up in their cars from "BMW of Manhattan," "Cadillac of Manhattan," etc., and fill our roads and parking lots. We're here all week to enjoy the scenery. :D

Absolutely. I used the 2x converter coupled with the 70 - 200 on an African safari a few years ago and the results were great.

I tried a x2 converter....admittedly cheap....on the end of my Nikkor 55-200. Gets foggy at max zoom. 1. Do I have the right x2 lens for that? 2. What's a good one? 3. Because I'm new to this camera....Nikon D31000.... What good is just a x2 converter? Thanks.

Yes, the 70-200 2.8 with the 2X is the ultimate way to go for sports/wildlife ! - more expensive, but more ergonomic than the 100-400.

Hi Neilp: Here is a great website on Canon lenses, it covers both usage and quality. Might help in your decision making. http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html Hope this helps.
