I am considering the purchase of a Canon 77d. The one with a US warranty lists for $799 vs around $549 for a non US model.
Does anyone have any experience going the non US route with Canon?
Many thanks.

The non USA (gray market) will not be repaired by Canon under warranty (well if they tell you which country it was meant for you can ship it to that service center). Unlike Nikon and others Canon will work on it for you, at full price parts and labor.

So if you trust Murphy to not mess with the camera during what would be the warranty period go ahead. If you lose your bet and have to send it in for service at full price you will probably pay more than the $250 difference. And you will pay shipping. Camera parts and labor are not cheap.

You might want to check the stores reputation by googling. If you haven't dealt with them online before it could be a bait and switch to attract the buyer even more with the lower price. What's the name of the store?

Park Avenue Photo and Abes of Maine.

Abes is bait and switch....stay away from them. Their reputation is less than desirable.

Doesn't look like Park Avenue is any better.

Take a look over here. This company is reputable.

I think the $549 for gray market is a good price but I don't trust those stores.

Amazon has white box equipment through a third party and offers a 4 year warranty through a third party. The way the warranty is stated to work is fix or an Amazon gift card for the purchase price. I just now bought a 24-105 f4L lens that way. I felt I was taking a chance but thought it an acceptable risk. As always, I study the reviews on the particular vendor before buying.

Yes, it is a gamble, and I don't like gambling. Resale will also be a problem (if you are honest about the camera at the time). That is a considerable difference in price for the exact same item, and chances are it will never need repair, but Canon does maintain a repair facility for a reason.

I once took a chance and purchased a Canon 18-135 STM lens from 42nd St. Photo that was grey market. Contacted Canon and they registered the serial number, and advised that as long as I had a receipt proving that it was purchased in the USA they would honor a 1 year warranty. Don't know if things have changed or not, but you might give them a call and see.

It is my understanding that this is definitely not the case with Nikon.

Just had to say the 77d is a great camera.

I bought mine via Amazon back in July when it was on sale for $649.
Get one with the USA warranty for peace of mind.

Amazon still has some good deals.

Canon is offering a refurbished 77D (body only) with a full one year warranty for $629.00 on their website. You might consider refurbished if price is a primary concern. I have a 77D and I absolutely love it. Mine was purchased at the regular retail price of $799.00, several months before the last sale by Canon where it was being offered new for $649.00.

I too have the 77D and love it. I bought it direst from Canon before it was available and also bought an extended warranty.
