I know it is not good. How could I take this so it is great? I'm thinking darken the sky. What about the colors of the house. Darkening the exposure would take care of that too I think. Am I thinking correctly? That would be increasing shutter speed and a smaller aperture? Would that be a faster or slower ISO? What else could I do to improve it?

This calls for a reshoot. I am sure there was a worse time of day to take this picture, but for the life of me, I cannot think when it might have been. Even in the middle of the night with on camera flash and high ISO you would probably have gotten a more useable RAW file as a starting point.

If this is a serious post: Start over with another image. And, ask the same questions while planning the shot, not after.
This one will never be "great".

Good advice. One problem is that you photographed in harsh midday sun. The contrast is too extreme. It would help to photograph when there are some clouds in the sky that can diffuse the sunlight. Clouds can act as a giant softbox.

If you do photograph in this light again, you could bracket exposures and merge them in an HDR program to help with the high contrast.

Isolating the house, adding some clouds to the sky helps. I think it would help more if the picture was taken at a different time of day to eliminate the harsh shadows.

Thanks for all the help guys. It was taken around nine in the morning. It was not a real estate shoot..... sort of. it was me practicing. I would rather mess up when I'm not being paid for it.

I think it's a good composition. The buildings on the left and right sides frame up those sides of the photo. The waterway provides a leading line between the two buildings. I would wait until the sun has gone down and photograph during that 30 to 40 minute period when there is still some blue in the sky. Don't wait until the sky is completely black. Lights should start coming on in buildings, homes, street lights that make the photo more interesting. Also, that's a good time to bracket exposures and merge the exposures in an HDR program. I use Photomatix Pro. You can get Photomatix Essentials for $39 and pro for $99.

Wait a few minutes until you get a bit more light on things. The middle is kinda dark.

First, what are you trying to accomplish? Your picture of the house is quite nice, the composition not so much! You have way too much foreground that is way underexposed (to the point that it becomes the subject of the picture! If you want to showcase the house, you have to make it the one thing that stands out (everything else in the pic should take on much less weight, if any at all. Also, find different angles to shoot from, show certain parts of the home that carry special interest, walk around the premise to find all the important views, that trigger responses from viewers, to make them wish to see mote! It takes a bit of time to think this through and to find your best compositions, but that time invested will prove worth the time! Good luck, take your time, don't rush it!

Thank you so much for the thoughtful and helpful response. i truly appreciate it. And if you think the house is okay that is all I was mainly concerned with. Thank you for instructing me on how to do a proper crop.

Another note on composition. The house next door (I assume it is next door since only part of the building in in your composition) looks a lot like part of the subject house. If it is in fact next door, a better composition might have been to shoot from in front of that house so that the right side of the subject house is seen and the trees to the left of the house and the side yard become the background isolating the subject house and making it more the focus of the composition.

Good thoughts, But wouldn't that make the garage the main focus>?
