I'm not sure anyone will suggest a hammer as an apropreate tool for lens work. Where did you find a Canon 100mm f2.8 hammer???

Just joshing. Some time you just have to try the unthinkable. Happy for your good luck.

I have that same lens and I love it. I'll keep a hammer handy in case it ever gets stuck.

I purchased a Sigma 180mm macro lens for my Nikons under almost identical circumstances... the seller was upfront about the focus getting stuck at infinity and being difficult to get to come down to focus at a nearer distance. I thought that because the price was sort-of right I'd take the chance, buy the lens and send it to Sigma for repair, all of which I did. The bad news came when they received the lens and without opening it at all declared it unrepairable (irreparable ?) since it was obsolete, sent it back on their dime and offered me 25% off a new model replacement if I ordered it within 30 days (IIRC). While I was ok with the $$ I spent on the older lens, I wasn't ready to pony up another $1,100 for a new replacement. Long story short, I've been licking my wounds ever since and debating with myself over the next step.... I don't generally think "percussive maintenance" when it comes to photographic equipment, but after reading your post I'm tempted to try a bit of shock therapy (kinetic, not electric) myself... I just need to build up the nerve.

Recently bought a Canon 100mm f2.8 usm macro lens on ebay. I knew the lens had a problem but bought it anyway, hoping i could find a solution to the problem, so i knew in advance about my purchase. The seller claimed to be no expert in lens repair and was stumped as to how to solve the problem. When i received the lens, which i bought for $180, the lens performed the same way as described by the seller; on any setting other than an f-stop of f2.8 the err01 is displayed. Tried a number of solutions suggested by a variety of users from many websites, but nothing worked. The only thing beginning to make sense was to sendit in to Canon for repair which could mean many $, making my good priced lens become a bad investment.
The one thing i noticed that was different from others with similar problems described was that you had to turn off the camera to take another image. My 7D Mk1 and 50D were resetting and cleaning the sensor and allowing me to take another photo without shutting down! Frustrated, I did the unthinkable; I picked up my hammer and tapped the lens firmly on the side and on the end while in automatic focus! The lens has been fine since! The seller had been given this lens by his uncle and had it for 3 yrs without solving the problem! So my question is, has anyone else had a similar experience, and in your opinion should i "thank my lucky stars" and use it till this MAYBE happens again, or should i send it to Canon just to be sure? Everything i have purchased from Canon Store has been good, but is it worth the cost to have it examined? Would like to hear YOUR story!

If I tried it on a stuck lens I would probably end up with a paper weight or a door stop depending on the size.

Sigma is good at declaring a lens irreparable. Years ago I purchased a canon film camera and received a Sigma lens as part of the
kit. It failed in short order and Sigma blew me off. The authorized Canon dealer tap danced around until the warranty was up and I in frustration wrote to Canon USA. They replied at once and replaced the failed Sigma with a much superior Canon lens. I was happy to
learn a lesson whose only cost was frustration and delay. Needless to say Sigma is not a name I recommend.

Hanging a 600 F4 off the front of the body using duct tape is a little precarious :)

Just start with a light tap and work up to a reasonable firm (non-destructive) whack! Use the rubber handle end of a hammer or a rubber mallet. If i had had a rubber mallet handy i would have tried that, but this revelation came so suddenly, i had to grab the nearest thing: my hammer!

Sigma is good at declaring a lens irreparable. Yea... (show quote)

I think you were very fortunate. Why on earth would anyone write to Canon to have them replace a Sigma lens?

Because it came with a Canon camera as part of a kit.
