I am new to UHH and enjoy all of the topics and photos.
I was in a flash class and the instructor used my camera, and now I have a red border within my view finder and it says 3x in the right top corner. How do I get rid of it so my view finder is full frame again? OBTW I shoot with a Nikon D500. Thanks for the help!

You could try doing a camera reset.

Did he change your Focus Point Illumination? Think it is A12 in the menu. Otherwise call or email the instructor?

It most likely says 1.3x. The image size (found in the shooting menu) was reduced. The red border shows how much of what you see will appear in your image.

I'm not sure if the D500 has the same buttons as a D850, but the d850 has a button near the af-on button. The default action was to change the crop factor. After hitting it by accident a few times I changed the function in the menu system.

The buttons on the back of the D850 and D500 are the same. The only thing I see near the AF-ON button is the joystick. It can be programmed in a number of ways, but I could not find how to use it to change the crop factor. I must be missing something. Could you tell us what menu that was in, or if I am looking at the wrong button?

The button I was referring to is just down and to the left of the af-on button. It's the one with a bumpy surface. The D850 manual calls is the sub selector.

I see a lot of choices for the sub-selector. I see AF area, but not image size or image area. I'll look again tomorrow, maybe my brain is turned off today.

I just spent some time looking at the menus, and I don't see crop factor as a choice. The button was the cause of the camera going into crop mode. Once I discovered that it changed the crop I would push it several times and it would cycle through the options. My D850 was a very early body, might have been a bug that was easy to fix so no one reported it, just guessing.

Before asking where you found it I had checked the D500 manual and the menus on both cameras. I realize we sometimes look at something and just don't see it. Maybe I'm a little less crazy than I thought.
