Hi, I'm a newbie to taking pictures. I love the way your pictures look. I'm trying to get to where you are.
Sometimes people ask me to take pictures of them and I take them so I can learn more. Could you tell me
what camera and lens you used to take the picture with.
Good work.

I will probably get blasted saying this!! It's a little scary but exciting at the same time. I love photography, It's my passion, there is nothing more that I love then to pick up my camera and go outdoors. It's an expensive hobby for me and so it is nice to be payed for my work. I am actually feeling a lot more confident.

Do you really want to get into the photography for pay business? It's a lot like work. You don't say how excited you are for this opportunity. If it were me (65 years old and no burning need of additional income) I would politely decline. It could indeed be a slippery slope in several different ways. Your two posted images are excellent, so I think the skill level is there. But if you do this well you will probably get more requests. You may need a business license sometime soon.

Do you really want to get into the photography for... (show quote)

I am not a professional photographer but years ago I learned from experiences (many bad) that any exchange involving money is business and that you can't conduct business as a friend!!

Therefore any interaction involving financial, personal or private matters is never ever conducted with friends and preferably not even in my small town, the only exceptions being spouse and clergy.

This has simplified my life, removed much stress and preserved many friendships.

Payed is the past tense and past participle of the verb pay but is used in a very limited sense. Payed has a common and historical use as a nautical term having to do with ropes and ship hulls. To pay out a rope or cable is to let out by slacking.

I charge $100/hour and travel allowance on anything over 10 miles. When one takes into consideration the processing time, it's quite a bit less than the on site $100/hour.

Oh, and there's a 50% up front non-refundable deposit.

A dividend for charging $100.00 an hour is the clients will be very cooperative to get their photo's in a timely manner rather than having you sit around.

I recently took photos for a friends bridal shower. Now she asked If I could take pictures for a friend of her’s sixth Birthday and they will pay me which is great since hers was a freebie. This party starts at 6pm is about 22 miles away. Also I don’t want to take a bunch of photos and maybe do three hours only.
I don’t know what to charge.
I was thinking charging $25 an hour but what do they get with that. Of course a flash drive is easy. Can I have some advice please..

Personally, I would charge a standard 1/2 day session fee plus expenses. Plus additional amounts for prints or images.

Since they are friends, charge $150 and you can only stay for 3 hrs max. As you get more experience and equipment you can charge more.

Exactly my going rate/time spent.

P.S. Outside the "friend" circle the charge is $150/hr. Some will take it and some will not relieving me to leisurely pursue my photography hobby elsewhere.

My mechanic charges $80.00 for an hour or part of an hour. You can't expect your friend to pay what you would get for a wedding. If it's only an hour or so. Depending on what is wanted and you say it is for a friend. I would charge $100.00 to $150.00 or just tell her your busy that day.

--------------

When I worked at IBM if we needed to figure out the worth of something we were working on, we wete told to take the cost and double it, then double it again and then add the cost. This figure was used as value. So try about 5 times whatever you feel the total cost will be.

Can you take good pictures? Sure, almost anyone can do that with the equipment available nowadays. So what is your time worth to you? Do you take photos for a living or for fun? I know firemen that only make fifteen dollars an hour and they save lives so don't even talk to me about a photo taker being worth a crapload of money. My camera ( Sony A77 with a Sony 18-250 lens ) takes great photos and I know my subject matter ( wrecks, fires, and doggy pictures ) so when asked to do something in a different style I leave it to the customer as to what they want to pay.

I know people who work for less than ten dollars an hour and they don't save lives. Maybe the fireman should look for a higher paying job. Just because one has an expensive camera it doesn't make them a photographer anymore than owning a hose and a ladder make you a fireman. People don't pay you for the equipment you have. They pay you for your skill.

Saving lives is a calling. And "look for a higher paying job"? Your tax payments largely determine what a fireman is paid so if you think they should make more then talk to your town council and tell them that the firemen deserve more so you're willing to pay more in taxes!

My idea makes great sense if you read what I said. Cheap cameras take great pictures today, agreed? And yes, a photographer may take a certain angle or look for a certain look but is that worth a crapload of money? Depends on what you want and what you're willing to spend. I do a certain type of photography and I'm damn good at what I do but I've seen cellphone pictures of wrecks and fires that were as good as mine! Timing is everything...and I know what the State Troopers are looking for and what the Fire Marshal is looking for but...
