I know a lot of you are smarter than me lol. I am using Lightroom 5, I just purchased a new external hard drive. Why is Lightroom not recognizing it? Won’t let me drag and drop photos to it. I renamed the Hard drive also. Please help

Assuming you are running Windows, can you see the drive in the Windows Explorer? Attaching a hardware device, such as an external hard drive, is a function of the PC/operating system, not Lightroom. Lightroom simply uses what the PC says is available.

Try browsing the external drive in Windows Explorer first. Once you get that established, I'll bet Lightroom will have no further issues.

If Bruce's approach doesn't work, try the "+" in the upper right of the folders box and see if it lets you add a drive. If I remember right, Lightroom does not try to show all the drives on a computer, just the ones you tell it has image files. If that doesn't work, put an image file on the new drive and try "Importing" it. It will make you pick a source drive and that should add it to the list.

you have to put a photo on the HD before Lightroom will see it.

IN LR, click on the icon to open a folder, name the folder and navigate to the drive you want to save it on. Once saved on that drive, which in your case would be the new drive, it will show up in LR and you can rename the folder or delete it.

I'm assuming you have or purchased a "Formatted drive" ?? Does windows see the drive with a new drive letter?? If so, follow some of the above suggestions!

Actually, the Folders panel in LR shows folders that have been imported (cataloged) by LR. LR has no idea what you have done while it is sleeping. Import or have LR move some folders the and it will appear on your screen. As many have sadly found Finder/Explorer view is not necessarily the same as LR’s view. Good to remember.
