Thanks bikinboy, would my D300 & D300s be a camera that has viberation when the mirror lifts? I know there is a lot more to learn before I buy anymore camera equipment.

I have logged at least 100,000 air miles with my 20 or so pound Gitzo. When it comes to being stable... Weight is not an issue. In the right parts of the world, you can get Sherpas for very little money to carry the stuff.

I'm going to put a hook on the bottom of my tripod and hang my backpack on it for the weight.

Laugh at my 30 year old Benbo all you want. For $50 (used) it's has turned out to be a rock-solid investment!

Wow! What fun. I liked the part were someone carried your 20lb for you. What takes you to so many differnt places? I have gotten some neat ways to go with getting set up here at home and I still need a good tripod for travel. I will be leaving on another birding trip next week. My sister and her husband who live in FL will come and we will travle to CL and come back to CO. We always have a great time. I just wish I had my new tripod. I did go to Hastings and bought 2 book. One was understanding exposure by Bryan peterson. The other one is The Digital photography book by Scott kelby. I will read them on the trip when I am not birding. They were recomened by some on this Form. EJK

Find a store that does consignment sales; that's how I got mine. Incidentally, a month after the guy got rid of the Benbo, he wanted to return his Gitzo and buy back the Benbo. Naturally the store refused both requests.

Manfrotto 055 aluminium legs and Really Right Stuff BH-55 head here, the problem I have is that now I have a super solid head on it, the aluminium legs are transmitting vibrations that are visible in the viewfinder, the previous useless head I had wasn't solid enough to see this. This is why I am thinking one of the very best tripod legs is the Really Right Stuff carbon fibre range. Next on my list :-)

I have the RRS TVC34L(I needed it because I'm tall) Paired with the RRS BH55. It is the last tripod I will ever buy. Finest tripod and head made. Ask anyone who owns one.

That is what I am talking about... I have heard glowing reviews. Plus I hate the Manfrotto leg locks, the RRS ones look much nicer

I use my manfrotto with a teather tools table to hold my laptop for tethered shooting. The RRS is in another league as far as stability.
