This synagogue has been re built by American and Hungarian money. We were able to see the inside which is shown to visitors on Thursday 3:00 to 5:00 PM The place is not open for prayers since there are not enough Jewish people in Szeged. Hope you enjoy the magnificent architecture

Love the photographs. Please post more....
Awesome structure, so massive, ornate, intricate, meticulously designed and restored! To me, it is a shame to know it is not being used as a place of worship as it had been originally been built for that purpose. Perhaps some Jewish congregations could plan travel events to include a service there from year to year...
Am Yisroel Chai. But not in Hungary.

Wait long enough and you will see a Chabad there.

Peter, very nice work. How did you get the lovely interior lighting? HDR or single exposure? The bimah is very similar to the one in the shul that I grew up in. On an unrelated note, might you be from Chicago?

I assume that this synagogue was destroyed in the war but why rebuild it just to look at. If there aren't enough Jews in Szeged to make use of it, then it was a waste of money. It is beautiful, however.
If you return to Hungary you should visit the Doheni Street synogogue is Budapest. Also heavily restored. This is the second largest synogogue in the world and is actively used.
I haven’t seen a synagogue that ornate. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! And I think we all know why there aren't enough Jewish people in Hungary. : (
Wonderful. With my very secular eyes it looks like it could be a christian church. I wish you had sent the full file so I could see the enlarged image.
Love it. Thank you for the post.
