Since you folks were so helpful finding a book, let’s try this television movie (or maybe an episode from a continuing series) I saw back in the ‘70s. Here are all of the details I think I remember.
* This really, really, really brilliant (think Einstein, Newton, etc.) but mysterious stranger shows up, I assume “from out of nowhere.”
* He is detained by the government at a military installation.
* At the end of the movie/program with the help of some new-found friends he escapes from the installation and makes his way to a mountain with a secret entrance.
* In a cave are coffins/sarcophagi with names like Newton, da Vinci, Einstein, etc. on them
* Apparently all of these people are aliens who were sent to earth at critical times in our history (think the Foundation Trilogy).
Any ideas?

Not familiar with that particular plot line, but it sounds like it could have been an Outer Limits or Twilight Zone episode. I would Google both those shows and with a little effort you should be able to find a listing of all the episodes and the plot lines for them.
Sounds like the TV show The Quester Tapes by Gene Roddenbury. They weren't aliens, they were androids - just like Quester. It ended up as a made for TV movie if memory serves.

Quantum leap?
Quantum Leap didn't start until 1989 and the shows didn't have that type of plot. And he was never a mysterious stranger since he took over the bodies of existing people.
No, Quantum Leap aired from 1989-1993. I think I was on Guam (1975-1977) when I saw my mysterious program.

I thought quantum leap was later than the '70's but I took a wild guess. I was an engineer in the Merchant Marine back then so I didn't see much TV.
Thanks everyone. Looks like Quester Tapes is the program.
I was disappointed when that series ended. Played into the hope that some higher power is looking out for us so that we don't self-destruct.

I did not see the program, but from your comment, We need that now.
Interesting...
It surely brings a few sentiments of "Deja Vu", but I can not associate it to anything.
I read and loved Foundation trilogy (and the other books by Asimov), all amazing.
I do remember something I read that some people that lived on Earth,
like Jules Verne (quite fantastic predictions, heh ?), Newton, etc. et al.,
being extraterrestrials. Maybe I read it from some old French magazine
"Planète" (Louis Pauwels and Jacques Bergier) or some of their books ("Der
planet der ümmoglisch moglischkeiten" or "Le Matin des Magiciens" ?).
If you discover any answer to your question, please let me know where
I can watch to it.

Loved that series. Unfortunately it lasted not long enough.
