Little things annoy me. For example, watching TV, a character will say, "My name is Lieutenant Fred McDonald." That isn't his name. His parents didn't name him Lieutenant. He should say either, "I am Lieutenant Fred McDonald" or "My name is Fred McDonald."

Another thing that annoys me is the excessive use of the word "need." "I'm going to need you to come with me." Really? When will he need that person to come with him? Watch old movies and TV shows, and you will not hear "need" used so often. We have become a very needy society.

Yes, I do find it difficult getting through each day.

What's worse is saying, "I am Lieutenant Fred McDonald" rather than, "I am Lieutenant McDonald". Rank and last name only.

I miss the word much. We used to say: That was so much fun." Today, it's "That was so fun." (sigh) The English language is devolving.

Wow, Jerry, you really hit a nerve on this one. I love it. The many posts have made me feel like I'm not the only one. Those that tell us to ignore it and to stop complaining and do something worthwhile just don't get it.
I watch TV and I read many posts here on UHH. That is where I read and hear most of these infractions. Most of them are peeves of mine and it drives me nuts. It's every single day.
On TV, mostly, the use of GROUND instead of FLOOR is really annoying. The guy was found inside the building and lying dead on the kitchen floor. They then say "we found him just lying there on the ground." Well, which one is it, people? A-a-a-r-g-h!!
Well, enough of a rant for today. Keep up the good work, Jerry.

The one that really bugs me is when persons on TV start a sentence with "So","

Funny you should mention that. I watch a lot of English and Australian TV, and they tend to use "floor" when they are talking about the ground. I watched a series about traffic accidents, and the police kept referring to victims lying on the floor.

My most annoying pet peeve is the use of the words "I mean" at the start of an answer to any question such as: "Hello, how are you?"
Answer: "I mean, I'm doing good." and using "good" instead of well. They may elaborate with "I mean, I'm doing very good."
Can't a person say "extremely well?" Overuse of the word "very" annoys me.

All these little things are the foundation of our language. I hate to see it crumble away.
It really is painful, in a fork scraping on a plate kind of way, listening to words being misused.
The devil is in the details.

I'm surprised that no one his mentioned my favorite peeve.
The incorrect use of the words "less" and "fewer".

To the any sayers,
