Why are you still looking? There’s three or four good bags are starting at 35 Dollars and up.

These all look like good solutions, and I will certainly check them out. But without looking, I'm not sure they offer significant benefits over my Tamron case that almost fits (it's a little bit shorter than optimum). My preference is for a good semirigid case that does not have space for the lens to move around inside but does have enough room to leave the foot plus quick release plate attached.

When I reviewed this lens while registering it with Nikon, my only negative was that they provided such a cheesy case with what is an excellent (but heavy) $1200 lens. The dust cover provides essentially no protection agaianst damage and no means of carrying the lens.

Pelican cases rock. I sell them as well as SKB. Mainly for videographers.

Thanks everyone for all the help. Many choices for me to choose from. I appreciate all the help, thanks! My lens came with a soft dust bag that is not very sturdy. I do have (like most everyone) many backpacks which I do use, but wanted something that I could just through on my car seat. Thanks again, and have a great day!

You don't need a case for the lens to keep it on your car seat. Just {gently} throw the lens on the car seat. If you leave it in the car throw an old jacket over it. Position the tripod mount to keep it from rolling forward in case you stop short.

Failing to find a suitable lens case, a friend of mine made his own using PVC pipe, caps, hinges, clasps, and foam padding.

Go to a Charity Sop and purchase a suitably over-sized cooler bag to house your 200-500. Usually has a pocket in the lid for a a freezer pack which will take a piece of rigid foam sheet. With more sheets of rigid foam build up in layers starting with a plain sheet on the bottom then cut progressive layers to conform to the lens profile at each level. On reaching half way profile will remain the same. Final layer will need an extra cutout to accommodate mount. The best tool to cut the foam with is an electric carving knife. Horizontal is probably best. Biggest advantage is that the bag will not have the name Nikon on it. Selection of bag customizes your style of carrying. Very cheap $15 for New Zealand plus $10 for an electric carving knife NZ$25 converts to about US$16

I have the Lowepro 36307 also. It is great, very light weight, thick padding and the 200-500 fits perfectly. I've never regretting getting this case.
