Sadly, the Nikon 200-500 does not come with a case unless one is purchased separately or comes with an off brand and sold as a kit.

I bought my 200-500 new from B&H. It most certainly came with a soft NIKON case. See cell phone pics attached.

Seems to protect the lens nicely.....and keeps out dust.

That's not what mine came with, nor is it what Nikon says it comes with. Nikon says it comes with a cl-1434.

Is it possible you got that case with another lens?
I have a couple of them but don't recall what lenses they came with.

Can you please provide the item number for the case you are showing? I can almost, but not quite read it on the end of the flap in your photo. My copy of this lens came only with the dust cover, and the documentation provided gives no reference to the proper flip top case. (And yes, it is a US lens bought from my local camera store.)

As much as I love this lens, it is still overall a low-usage lens for me, and it adds more weight to my bag than I like. During a time-constrained search just before I was leaving on a trip this summer, I found a similar case intended for one of the Tamron zooms (160-600, maybe) that fits fairly well and was not too expensive, but I'd really prefer to have the proper Nikon case.

If you click download and then click again you can read CL-M2 on the flap. Now I know what lens mine came with, a 300mm F4.0 Af-s.

Thanks Bill. I'm not on my usual computer this morning and could not quite make it out on this screen even with the download & zoom.

Let me apologize to all. The pic of the lens case I sent, was apparently the one that came with my 70-200.

The one that came with the 200-500 is a pull-string, bag like thing, with no padding. I does have a solid bottom.

Sorry again.

Thanks for letting us know. I was hoping that we had found a solution. Still looking, it appears.

I've kept mine in this case made by Promaster. I bought it at the local shop where I bought the lens. It's worked very well. I do keep the foot detached when not using the lens.

I second this choice as I have that lens also and this came with it, bought used from the seller. It fits the camera body attached to the lens and the tripod mount ring, and has a heavy-duty strap for carrying the whole package over your shoulder. (Which is very heavy BTW, with a D810.)

My lens came with a cheap felt bag. I bought (suggested from this site) an Ape case (Amazon). It works great:

OK... I was wrong (second time this month!)... The Nikon 200-500 that I have rented came in their (Lensrentals) custom cases. These are clearly marked as being theirs. This case system is fabulous, in my opinion. I knew the box was theirs, but thought the soft case was Nikon. Sorry for the confusion... They are both top-notch cases, BTW.

I agree the felt bag that comes with the lens is little protection for the lens, just keeps the dust off and maybe prevents some scratches. The APE case looks to me like the best option and I plan to buy it. For the present, I am carrying it in my old foam-padded waist carrier bag that I used to use to carry one camera body and two lenses. It works in a pinch and protects the lens well.

I use all Pelican cases for my big lens. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/40657-REG/Pelican_1500_000_110_1500_Case_with_Foam.html

Thanks everyone for all the help. Many choices for me to choose from. I appreciate all the help, thanks! My lens came with a soft dust bag that is not very sturdy. I do have (like most everyone) many backpacks which I do use, but wanted something that I could just through on my car seat. Thanks again, and have a great day!
