What brainiack at Microsoft thinks turning num locks off is the correct thing to do? Win 8 defaulted num off and every time I left my laptop on and closed the screen num locks would be off again.

Just another reason for the saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it" I converted to Windows ten for about one day. Nothing but problems with older software. Re installed Windows 7 and no problems. I've always been happy with Windows 7. I'll keep it as long as I can.

Depends on your criteria. Windows 7 security updates will end in early 2020. From then on, you'll have a very insecure system.
I had the same thought a while ago, or switching entirely to Linux, but the negatives outweighed the positives for my application and printer needs. And I actually LIKE Windows 10, with Cortana disabled.
I have been fortunate in not having any problems with Win 10 updates, though I have not actually SEEN any useful changes to my machines. I look at the "new features" Microsoft boasts about and just yawn.

Worth looking into. Editing the Registry gives me the willies, though ....

George,

While you can certainly do some damage hacking the registry, I wouldn’t let it scare me if the suggested changes are well researched and documented. If I recall correctly, when you execute regedit, a backup of the registry is created that you can revert to. If not, you can manually back up the registry so that if your changes aren’t successful, you can revert to the backup copy, but let me check my facts and procedures (it’s been awhile), and I’ll post further on the subject in this thread if you decide to do it. BTW, is your keyboard directly USB connected, or wirelessly connected with a USB receiver?

Thanks to all for the help. TriX, this is a laptop, so I can only assume that the keyboard is hard-wired.

Have you gone in the settings menu to see if there is anything there to select/deselect ?

Windows/Microsoft need belting for the stress they cause users of win10 after updates.
Almost every time I get an update, something doesn't work or goes wrong.

Absolutely. MS Breaks things that worked fine and could care less about the misery they cause. I got off the (MS / Adobe / Autodesk) software UPDATE merry go round long ago. Too much Insanity. No regrets. Happy again.

Since we're talking NumLock, I have an issue with a Dell desktop and a Dell laptop re the NumLock key. When I turn on the two computers I have to enter a four digit PIN to start Windows10. Both computers came with Win10 installed. Before I enter the PIN I have to hit the NumLoc key or nothing happens. My issue is that when Windows opens I have to hit the NumLoc key again if I want to use the numeric keypad. A lot of the time I forget to do this so when I enter a number it won't register but sends the cursor wherever it wants. Also, if the computer sits a while not being used the NumLoc key becomes inactive again. I wonder if this happens to any Win10 computer or just Dells and can this be corrected so that the NumLoc key stays on.

Try this:
1. open control panel
2. search control panel is at the top right and Type Ease of access.
3. click on ease of access center
4. click on Make the keyboard easier to use
5. uncheck turn on mouse keys
Give it a try.

M$ recently (a few days ago) released a new Update that reverted everyone back one level due to a major goof. I think the bad update only affected those who installed the update manually. Could this be your problem?

Just a week ago, I had the very same problem. My laptops keyboard completely stopped working. I have a Lenovo Idea Pad, with touch screen. When I wanted to type the typewriter screen would come up. I tried every trick I knew, then I noticed the language (ENG) was vacant on my task bar. On further investigation I found my laptop was in tablet mode. I took off the tablet mode, and the keyboard came back to fully function.
