I do appreciate your points, but if a program is purchased and the purchaser is happy with it, then updates are unlikely to be really needed, anymore than an extra chrome strip added in a new year face lift of an existing model of automobile.
However, I'm sure that fans of Adobe and PS have a good deal, and that Affinity is a worthy rival.

Affinity is a good program.....most are good, just depends on what you need pr want in program....i have used it predicesor for many years. I have been using photoshop since cs2... and have tried almost every one out there, and keep coming back to Adobe. To each his own..

Updates may or may not be needed or wanted, depends on what the updates are.... over ther 5 year period, if all updates are done, it could cost more than or close to the $600, if not, way less...

They don't compare actually, Affinity is slow as molasses and often stalls for me. On the same system I have CS6 which operates without flaw and quickly. I have consulted with the forum and there is no use...I'm updated with the latest stable versions, no beta is available I know of and if it were I would in no way want a beta for a product stable that is worse than most beta programs?

Does it do good or better? Maybe with some RAW files it does, I like the way it processes noise and dust/scratches on those features provided, the Haze Removal and the Live Filter Layer features are great tools from a Landscape perspective. There are some unique features and unique tools, it has many pluses but the deal breaker is.....

Speed, and couple in a reliability factor, crashing and "not responding" then responds, waiting while it goes in and out wondering if it's going to crash again... how long is this going to take to do this..... when Adobe just does it seamlessly on my same machine? I don't think so, cheap price means crappy stability ...get what you pay for so if cheap is what you want?

(I really like the focus stacking feature they have incorporated, offered is Panorama, New Stack, New HDR merge, New Focus merge.... experimentation is required some groups do better stacked and some do better focus merged ...it depends and the great part is you have options to try .... that actually do vary. It's superior to Photomerge, Focus Merge is...I believe. I would not place too much stock in opinions regarding any photomerge system though, I don't believe enough people weed out and/or create additional images to enhance things adequately ...sometimes one or 2 images don't belong and even if there only 5 total, you can compensate by tossing 2 out and using the merged combinations of the 3 left to create new images for replacing the two tossed out selections,,,,I mean something tipped the process off to not use them so why?...often with photomerge it will select 99% of one image out several, effectively not merging anything but one image ...because the mask has 99% of all the images blacked out ...what is the point of that?)

If you fire off 5 quick shots using a tripod, however you choose to do so .... you will have 5 separate images generated and you can combine them in Photomerge on CS6 like I use, Photomerge is going to select the most optimum image or parts from these same images to make one, what it chooses to mask out is very revealing sometimes. Especially if it selects to reveal 100% or so of just one shot out of the 5? Remove that one from the mix and Photomerge the other 4 left, create the best single image from those 4 into one? Take this new image created and photomerge that with only the one removed first? It will still provide the same results and your new creation of 4 into 1 will get booted....and that first one it chose will still be chosen, mostly...if not all of it again and the 4 into 1 will be blacked out in the mask.... yes I allow it to analyze shots

I think your wrong about the slow part it could be your pc Affinity loads faster than LR,PS, or LRCC, I HAVE YET TO HAVE IT CRASH and works with little or no issues.

I have used Affinity Photo ever since it came out. First I hate to be on a monthly rate for a program, I'd rather own it outright rather than paying monthly fees. Affinity does everything I need plus some. I have used PS since version 7 and was very happy with it. It was upgraded several times until they went to a monthly rate. I said "Aloha" at that time.

I’ve been using Affinity for over a year and I am very happy with it. I’ve used their excellent video tutorials but I now need to step it up a little. I just received their highly recommended workbook from Amazon yesterday and look forward to maximizing this software. Previously used Elements and like Affinity better.

For anyone else interested in this book. This book is now on sale for $29 from serif so I just ordered it. After placing the order the $6 shipping gets it to the US in a month. Amazon is quicker I'm sure.

How long does stuff usually take to get to Hawaii from the other side of the globe?

Depends, I received parts from Gitzo parts from Europe in three days although I paid for next day air. I get Italian riding gear from Europe usually in 5 to seven days depending on u.s. customs. Japan 5 to 10 days. The longest is from China and US parcel post (usually books) 1 to 2 months.
