If you can, take a small boat or kayak up Spruce Creek. Once west of I-95 you can find gators and other wildlife for great photos. With a canoe or kayak explore the creeks and backwaters between US #1 and the Halifax and Indian Rivers.

I will be spending three months in New Smyrna Beach at the beginning of the year. Am looking for information on places to photograph, camera clubs in the area, and lastly, whether there is a pool facility such as a YMCA pool in the region. All help appreciated-thanks in advance.
Welcome Snowbird, there's plenty of options for photography and swimming....

Thanks Silverman, the more i learn about NSB, the happier I am that I chose to rent there.

I have spent much time in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. The Beaches are Beautiful, catch a "Sunrise" in the early morning. Have a "Burger" at "Breaker's-on-the-Beach". A quaint historical downtown. A National Seashore not far away. Great Scenery in a multitude of locations. Also, if you enjoy Trains and Railroads, the "FEC" runs Right thru N.S.B. My daughter lives there for the past 8 years and loves it. About 1 hour from Orlando. 30 minutes from Kennedy space center. A great place to spend a Photography vacation.

If you want to try some action photography, New Smyrna Speedway has events during Speedweeks in February and the big track in Daytona is right up the road. Have a blast!

There is a "Y" in Edgewater, the next town south of NSB, which has a beautiful outdoor pool. I don't know what they would charge for "outsider" admission, but surely would be reasonable, or, if you have something like "silver sneakers" in your insurance, it would be no charge. Enjoy your time in NSB; lots to see and do, and a very friendly atmosphere. As mentioned in another reply, the Sugar Mill ruins is an interesting locale with some photogenic scenes.
Updated reply: Regarding the pool at the YMCA in Edgewater, I am quite sure, since the pool is outdoors with no enclosure, that it will be closed during the "winter" months. However, by driving a bit further north, to Port Orange, I believe the "Y" up there has an indoor pool which is open year-round. Check with them when or before you arrive. I'm glad I read your post again and learned the time of your visit.

My sister-in-law lives there, inland. We go a couple of times a year, as she has a nice rental condo in Coronado Towers. There’s plenty to see, up and down the coast.
St. Augustine is a very old and photogenic city. The drive up A1A is great. You can kayak and see dolphins in NSB. You can take a day trip to Cape Canaveral and visit the Space Museum. The beach is very family oriented, and great in winter.
Here’s a view from Coronado Towers:

Yes, I went to a Race at the N.S.B. Speedway, it was my 1st "Stockcar" racing experience, very, very loud, tickets included free Earplugs.
A fun time, stayed for 3 races, a small wreck in the 4th turn in each race. Would like to go again.
Isn't New Smyrna Beach the most dangerous beach in the world for shark attacks ?
