iMac ( IPhoto) will not read Sony raw images

I just switched from Nikon to Sony. I shot some images in Sony raw only to have my IMac not recognize them. Is there any upgrades Anyone is aware of? What is the best way to convert Sony to jpg to view/ edit?

I don’t own a Sony camera, but a quick Google search says that Sony offers a free download of a program named Imaging Edge. That should solve your problem! https://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/imagingedge/en/download/

An apple link (they are, after all, the expert on this topic) for help-https://support.apple.com/photos. My version is 3.0. Photos is not a particularly high-end photo application and you may find that you need to move on to a different application at some point to get more out of your photos. I only use Photos for snap shot type things, like taking pictures of a dog food that my dog liked or taking photos of my rental where I fixed something. All of my treasured images go into LR and PS.

Look for a mac version of the sony post processing software from their site. You can either transfer the Jpg to your favorite PP programme or continue with the Sony one.
For those using linux look at UFraw, Digikam or Darktable. these have the most up to date camera raw files.

While I agree that CaptureOne (Sony), which is free, is the way to go, I think that either you are using the wrong name for the application or you are using the wrong application. The current version of the Mac OS's photo program is Photos, not iPhoto. If you are using iPhoto then it's highly likely that it is old, not updated and thus unable to read .arw files that were designed after it stopped updating.
Photos on my Mac has no problem with .arw files on my a6500 or my RX10 IV.

Mac replaced iPhoto with Photos several years ago. Photos is a better program than iPhoto and I hear it works ok with Sony images.

Apple does a great job of keeping camera file formats up-to-date in latest MacOS updates with assistance from each camera manufacturer. I recommend keeping your Operating System up-to-date to the highest version your hardware will support. It's easy and free, but always do a TimeMachine backup before starting the backup in the unlikely (but possible) event that something unfortunate goes wrong during the upgrade. You'll also want to be sure which applications are 32-bit and will no longer be fully supported by the newest OS which now wants only 64-bit software. Many/most will still work, but some won't, so, as one advertiser notes, "know before you go." And, you could be pleasantly surprised at how incredibly robust the latest version of Photos has become with many of the editing capabilities of LightRoom.

Perhaps you might share what version os OS X you are running? Is it up to date? Hard to answer a question just lobbed into the great blue.

Before I upgraded to High Sierra from El Capitan, I was able to open Sony ARW images with the Mac's Preview and from there to Save-As in several other formats. I seem to recall TIFF as one option. I'll give this another try and report back.

I have the Sony RX100VI had to download the Adobe DNG converter. You then drop the files you want converted into this application and answer the questions and tell it to convert. I then move the converted .dng files in to Lightroom. A pain in the rear!!
