D850 shows Err code. Buttons on left dont work. Stuck in P. I shoot in M. As if this wasnt bad enough I then fell with my D810. Smashed my knee and trashed this camera. AF and playback/live vew not working. Manual focus doesnt focus at infinity. One week left in the UP for gorgous fall color. Down to the cell phone. Any help on the D850 appreciated!! A friend will loan me thier Canon or I will rent. Geez....

1> Press and hold the Qual and the Exposure Comp buttos for 15 seconds. That is a system reset.
2> Remove and replace the battery after 30 seconds.
3> If you have a battery grip attached, remove it.
4> remove the lens and repeat above.

That's all I can think of. Hopefully you are using a Nikon battery in the camera.

I hope the knee isn't too bad.

ERR is a lens communication issue most of the time. Remove the lens and clean the contacts. Also try the reset mentioned above.

Without knowing the extent of your lens collection, it is only possible to speculate possibilities.

What is the lens and lens type mounted with this error?

Is it possible it is an older lens and you have it set to something other than MINIMUM aperture? That will cause an ERR message.

Absolutely not, that issue will give a FEE message.

Thanks to everyone so far! I have done a factory reset. Nada. And i did remember to save my settings. I tried ny nikon 70-200. Nada. I was using a new...or around 6,000 clicks tanron 24-70 but have NOT cleaned the contacts on any of them. For this I am hopeful. None of this seems to explain why the buttons on the left dont work. Lets hope dirty contacts are effecting this too!! Thanks guys!

Had something similar a few days ago, using a Loawa manual lens (also on a D850)- I'd get two shots then, "ERR". I'd take off the lens, then remount, get two shots, repeat. I noted the battery indicator was low and switched to a fresh battery... and everything worked fine after that. Also note the depleted battery was NOT a Nikon battery. I seem to recall the D850 draws slightly more power than the D810- thus a slightly different battery came with the D850.

"ERR" is simply a general error code that means something is wrong with the camera. The actual error code that tells the technician what is wrong with the camera is stored internally and take Nikon restricted software to read. However, a good tech can usually tell what is at fault with some careful troubleshooting. This sounds like an electronic issue that may require circuit board replacement. This would require re-programming with Nikon specific software. I would recommend sending it a Nikon repair facility.

remove the memory card as well. I do this for the 'Green light of death' too.

And if you bring it to be repaired, they will charge a FEE.

Because there is nothing wrong with the camera you just used the lenses not made by them. They don't warranty that.

Cleaned the contacts. Tried 2 different nikon lens and 2 different charged nikon batteries. Reset to factory. Again. Guess it goes to Nikon. Grrrr
Many thanks for all your suggestions.

With regard to the 810 that you fell and smashed. Do you have a rider on your homeowner's insurance policy covering your cameras? These are all-fault policies; they will cover everything. If you do have such coverage, contact your insurance company. They will undoubtedly cover all the cost of repairs. If you don't have such insurance, buy it. It is very inexpensive. Though the years, I have gotten coverage for damage caused by an underwater case leaking and for damage caused by dropping a camera.

The person that recommended putting your cameras on your home owners policy is “right on”. I have had several cameras repaired and my insurance pays for the repairs. Talk to your insurance agent and have your camera equipment listed on a “inland marine policy”.

The 850 should be new enough that it should still be under warranty. Call Nikon and send it in. It will take a while, but they will get it fixed.
