When I lived in the boonies field mice and shrews were always dining on my car's wiring and the paper filter in the air cleaner.

I was told to get some Irish Spring soap and cut shavings and place under the hood. Of course take them out before you start engine. I know all about this ##*&&% mice and rats that chew up expensive wiring.

Hey that's no joke; my friend had mice chew through his Toyota's wires. Turned out they use a cornstarch-based wire insulation (cost savings, no doubt) that's apparently pretty tasty to rodents. He threw mothballs in his engine compartment but I would imagine Irish Spring smells a whole lot better.

A couple of winters ago, I hadn't drove my vehicle for a week or so. Checked under the hood before starting up and found a squirrel and its nest under there.

It depends on the vehicle, too. We bought my daughter a used Jeep Grand Cherokee when she was in college in New York. While parked at home, rodents ate wiring up twice. We have a later Jeep that has not had that problem as well as a car. My son also had a Jeep of a different year that did not have that problem. I think Chrysler corrected the problem.
