Hello,
Just a retired old man, have a new smart phone
and want to learn to take good photos with this
device.
Have no idea what it can do. And don't know much
about taking "good" photos. Just a point and shot
type of guy, in the past. Looking to do better.

Welcome Larry. Don't feel bad if you don't get a lot of replies to your post beyond a solid "welcome." Frankly, there's not much emphasis put on shooting with phones on here other than some occasional encouragement to "shoot what you have" and work your way into equipment that will offer you more flexibility as you go forward if that becomes a future interest. The one thing that is universal to any kind of shooting which is a major part of getting good results regardless of the equipment you use and that aspect is something you should consider studying - i.e., composition. Everything else about your phone camera is pretty much on auto unless you download an app that gives you more manual control but frankly that's not very rewarding and rarely improves the pictures you'll get already. There are scads of good books available, even free from your local library if you have one handy. Good luck as you get more deeply into your interests and there are lots of instructional videos on
http://www.youtube.com (just search.) Post some pictures in the other sections which you will find listed at the bottom of the page when you select "Home" from the menu at the top of the page. Look through and see what interests you and go for it.
Very kind, encouraging replies...nice to see such support to a budding photographer!
Welcome Larry. Cell phones take pictures too. Enjoy the forum.

Welcome. As gessman said composition is key to all good photography.
If you have an iPhone and are in the vicinity of an Apple Store you can take advantage of their excellent free of charge classes on iPhone photography.
Welcome to UHH Larry, glad you joined us.
Have fun, learn and enjoy the forum.

Hi Larry and welcome aboard. I do most of my shooting with my DSLR but when it comes to close up macro shots of small insects I use my cell phone which works beautifully. It works so well that I can't justify in getting a macro lens at this time but eventually I will because I know I can still get more out of the macro lens. I don't know what kind of cell you have but I have the Note 9.

I have a Pixel (version 1). I probably do more post shot editing, because the phone has a built stabilizing mechanism.
The AI in these are getting better with each software upgrade. I am looking forward to the next version which
makes taking night pictures even better.
Without stability, my pictures would always be blurry (I am just getting older). And the phone is lighter and less visible.
Phones are accepted easier, because they are always present. A DSLR stands out like a sore thumb. I had
an old DSLR and it always made a click sound. The newer DSLR are probably better.
Composition is now my skill to be improved.
