Preferably when the sky is darkest... and, you should be away from city lights.

I am going to Finland in January and my main objective is northern lights. I have some questions. What time of the day is best to capture photos. And Camera setting for best results?

I’m using a D850 with a 20 1.8. Settings were start with ISO 3200 15 seconds. Reduce the time depending on intensity of the Aurora. The lower the time the more texture you’ll capture. Set WB at 4000K. Also pre focus at infinity during the day and tape the focus ring with gaffers tape.

I lived in Alaska and agree with the above. Clouds and skylight are the primary issues. If no clouds and the skys are very clear even ground lights are secondary.
