Would anyone with a D300S please do me a favor? Take any lens off, hold the strap rings in place, and shake the camera. Do you hear anything rattling? If not, then I guess I am scr*w*d! Trying to get some photos of the meteor shower last night, using a new tripod. Camera and lens fell off the tripod and went crashing onto my concrete patio. Lens took the worst of it, and is already on it's way to Nikon. Camera looks and seems okay, but I'm just wondering about that mild rattling sound from within. Thanks for any help.
Actually my camera fell out of the bag onto the tile floor. It has a slight rattle but I don't see any change in it's performance.

Probably the internal level that determines whether you are shooting in landscape or portrait mode.
The body shouldn't rattle. Something is obviously loose and I think you need to investigate further. Do you have another lens to mount and try? If not, maybe a trip to a camera store would be a good idea to "try out" another lens. It would be a shame to wait for your lens to be repaired only to find out you body needs to make a 3 week refresher trip right afterwards.
Hi, MT. Thanks for your advice. I did mount my 70-200 on the body, and it seemed to work okay, but I am a perfectionist, and the rattling has me worried. I also have a D80 body, and that may have to be my replacement soldier while I send the D300S in for a "physical".
Hi, GMJ. It was like watching the Olympics....camera and lens fell, bounced off the tripod leg, did a flip, and landed about 8 feet away. I gave it a VERY low score!
I once had an alarming rattle on my 5D MK I. I looked everywhere and after lots of sweat and tears one day decided I wanted to travel light. I removed the battery grip (Which I normally leave attached 24/7) and took out the battery compartment cover making my camera back to a normal size DSLR and went about shooting that day.
The rattle had stopped. I figured it must be the grip but still could not see anything wrong with either body or grip. Next time I attached it the rattle was still not there so I thought lucky break. A month or so later it came back.
I then realised it was the battery cover that had come loose inside its storage slot on the grip and was rattling around inside the grip. The moral to this story not all rattles are fatal.
My mark II hot shoe mount is now loose. No rattle but plenty of play between flash and body. This worries me a little. Good excuse to get a 5D mark III
