I am just a heart beat away from buying one of these.
I found them at a reliable camera store in Palo Alto,CA -they are one of the few major stores left in the San Francisco area.
the 20D is $195 body only with a battery pack -
the 30D is $229 body only
+ $ for the adapter for my FD lens kit -
The sales man recomended the 20D as the better buy with the extra battery capeability.

The 30D hands down!
If it is in good shape and works, $229 is a very reasonable price. Test it before buying.
You probably don't need the "battey pack."
A spare battery is fine 99% of the time.

I am used to haveing extra charge up batteries in my pocket any how. I too was leaning toward the 30D as being newer - any way of finding out how many shutter clicks are on them - this is a very trusted store.
As I am not going to be shooting as a pro - but just want to move up to manuel DSLR shooting as I did with my film SLR I feel comfortable buying either one - I have found 20D for $179 but am leary of them.

The 30D was an excellent camera when it was introduced and still is today, I'd go for that.

You can check the shutter count of many Canon bodies use this:

I know it worked for my 7D not sure about the 30D though.

Last time I checked, the shutter count on the 30D was not available. Worth checking again however.

Get both I have 2 20d and 1 30d they are great. The only draw back with them is the noise at high ISO and I am talking about 800 or above,just get you a good noise reduction program. I have even taken a jpeg file from the 20d and made a 20x30 pic from it and of held up great for a 8 pixel camera.

I have the 30 and 40 along with a 7D. I just used the 30D, last weekend while the 7D was being repaired. I still love that camera and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it!!

Go with the 30D for the bigger screen on the back!!!!
The 20D back screen is very small.....Real small.......
I have both and that is the "big" difference to me.

If you want the extra battery you can buy one on ebay for 30-40 dollars. I bought one that has an internal remote for 41 and it works great

Don't worry about a battery pack with the Canon 20 or 30 as they both last a long time on a good battery. I have had both cameras and think the 30 was the best. In fact the 30 was better than my 50. Good luck. Bee

My sentiments exactly! The 20D is a fine camera, but the little screen is SO little in comparison-- my older eyes really appreciate more visual real estate.

I just bought a used 30D to go with my 5D MK II, as I don't always want to take my 5D to places where there is a good chance of it being stolen or damaged. I have been very pleased with the overall performance of the 30D and would recommend it whole heartily.
