Tech question and wrong answers

More than once folks having an issue with a camera get the wrong answers.

When you purchase something new it works right out of the box or not. That this thing uses different cards or accessories makes no difference. DO NOT send folks onto a wild goose chase: try this, try that. They have nothing to try or to do other than:

SEND THE DAMNED THING BACK for an exchange or refund if newly purchased. If more than the return policy allows do try a couple of things first, easy stuff then SEND FOR REPAIR the stuff is under warranty. The ONLY REASON to try different things is to eliminate the obvious (bad card/accessories) and prevent not having the camera for sometime.

The only time something else is needed is when folks try an advanced feature for the first time. The rest is simply BS.

in conclusion:
If under return period:
RETURN (warning: may have a restocking fee - fight that with your Credit card - A return for defect id different from a return "I did not like it".)
EXCHANGE (No fee or restocking fee should be involved - See above)

If under warranty:
Repeat the issue if possible (it maybe a simple glitch that happens only once - You do not go to the doctor for a single sneeze, do you?)
Try to reproduce the issue with with the same type of accessories/card.
SEND FOR REPAIR

Typical trouble shooting:
1) Reset the camera to default settings (read the manual for 'How')
2) Try to reproduce the issue.
3) Troubleshoot USING THE MANUAL. You will learn more that way, just saying.
4) Consult forums dedicated to your camera lens or accessory. UHH is a generic site, not a specialized photo anything.

Some people might need helpful advice, like "Turn the camera ON" or "Install fresh/charged battery."

GREAT COMMON SENSE ADVICE ---- Which of course translates into just why so few adhere to it --- Lets face it 99.99% of the time out of the box brand new cameras work just fine -- The real issue is the dumb user either can't read or wont read as a result of being lazy the damn manual & assumes other folks will provide quick fix answers -- Then you have a lot of Hogs just gotta prove just how damn smart they are with all those multi page answers

Good forum. One thing I will add. Good practices.Put battery in camera with start button off.
Reinitialize the new card completely. When changed battery turn camera off. Test shoot with new card of lens
and check your settings with test shots. Yes read the basic startup protocol. Manuals i breeze through I find
needing more intense understanding of how to use the camera in books or alternates like Sony has
how to use your camera for this and that online.
I think you are right a bunch of guesses on a problem unless it is a simple answer are just a merry-go-around.
Some people just have to fool around until they get it. I was looking at a resource called The Film Look on youtube.
Great suggestions in 10 minute video on video. Suggested checklist for shooting. I have make all the mistakes.
Not turning on the shotgun mike. Starting to shoot. Checking focus. It may look focused but a slight reframe
may put the feature the person out of focus just a bit. Good Luck.

I think another issue is that many people either don't know how or are unaware that a text search can be performed on pdf manuals. Confronted with a 500+ page manual, they quickly give up using it to find solutions to their problems. In the past I've routinely helped members with their questions by simply downloading their camera model's manual and doing a quick text search; usually it didn't take much more than a minute or two to find the desired information for them. But after a while this gets tiresome... people should perform their own text searches!

If you go to this or any other forum and you get two or more differing solutions to a problem there are the following possibilities: all are right; all are wrong; one is right and the others are all wrong. By asking the question you admit you don't know therefore you cannot evaluate the answers. At that point disregard all advice. If it's under warranty call manufacturers tech support, call the store you bought it from B&H has proved helpful to me on several occasions, if it is new return it for replacement--NOT REPAIR.

As you get more experienced with your equipment UHH can be a great information source. There are experts on this site who can help with just about anything photographic. As you spend more time on the forum, you will get to know who knows which about what.
