Head Markings Show This One is Male the other one was female.
80D, 100-400+1.4x @ 560, 1/640 @ f/8.0, ISO 2000 hand held at about 65-70 feet cloudy dim light
My dad who was a fast telegrapher for the Railroad said these birds used tap code, but not the standard Morris Code. I am sure he was spoofing me, perhaps?
The coloration feather details of this bird capture are striking. I especially appreciate your camera setting details for this capture. In my mind, I consider UHH should be an educational forum and your details give all of us a starting point for our future attempts to capture. Jack up the shutter speed and no cumbersome tripod is needed.
Thank you for the details

My dad who was a fast telegrapher for the Railroad... (
show quote)
Thanks, you are welcome.
I suspect your Dad's story that they are pecking in code is related to people seeing images in clouds, shadow patterned etc. Only being a telegrapher his ear/brain was constantly trying to make code out of repetitive noises.

Thanks, I have about 20 other shots left out of about 80 OOC before I culled. Some of those may be better if the spirit moves me to go over them in detail.
Beautiful shot, Jerry! Love his indignant expression.

I got a glimpse of one just a few minutes ago taking off with peanut from one of the feeders.
Came back and tried to peck a hole in the old swing set, then got a peanut from a feeder and left - I got some shots but have to run an errand so will look at them later.
great image he looks quite large

thanks, "All About Birds" uses common birds as a size standard they say "Robin sized".
In a while I will post a few of the shots I got in much better light, including some of him getting peanuts from the feeder.
