I just bought a Nikon D 500. When I hit the photo preview button, I would get red lines, then gradual black out. I had to turn off the camera and back on before I could get the photo back up. A friend suggested I try newer flash card.i now have in the camera SanDisk Extream 64 gb. I also bought the Sony XQD g series 32 gb which I have not installed yet. Thought I would try the SDXC alone first. So today I still get the fade-away but not the lines. Is it because I am not using the XQD? Or is something wrong with the camara?

Have you checked your manual for compatible cards? Pages 387 and 388.
Granted, there will be other cards that are compatible, but have not been checked by Nikon.

I wouldn't worry about the cards, if the photos are OK on you computer call Nikon, your screen is bad.

If you just purchased the camera, return it and get another one. I wouldn’t take any chances with my hard earned money to get stuck with a possibly defective product.

If it is a new Nikon and not a grey market camera, I would call Nikon support at 1 (800) 645-6687. Your camera is under warranty and they will help you resolve the problem one way or another.

Take the D500 back get a new camera. I had the D800 2 of them when they came out. I use all good practices with my cards.
It drove me crazy mounting the 2 slots for different cards. I spent a fortune buying different kinds of cards Nikon recommended to end the problem.
Sent it in and they fixed the software etc. Other issues made me sell the Nikon bodies keep some nikon lens and eventually moved to Sony mirrorless.
Still think Nikon is great but some issues like video made me move on.

Thought it might take more battery life. Thanks I will use it. Do you just leave the SD spot empty?
I always use dual cards. Funnel RAW to the XQD card and JPEG to the SD card. I do this for both redundancy and for workflow. I do transfer from both cards to my laptop and eventually to backup drives after culling. Many of my pics are used as straight JPEGs but I obviously have the RAW files if I fancy more delicate work. I am 99% sure the extra power draw running dual cards is minuscule compared to using the LCD to review pics - or even more - using live view
Re the D500 - Have this camera and have never experienced what you describe. Camera back to Nikon (obviously after calling them and confirming that it is defective)

I didn’t see where you say that the photos are perfect/missing/messed up on your laptop.

Take the camera back to the store where you bought it and request a refund or a new replacement. Best of luck.
Hi Mary,
I think you have a camera problem unless you failed to format the card after you inserted it in the camera. I shoot canon but altering the CF or SD card type or manufacture should not make any difference. If you have a camera glitch you should find Nikon very accommodating.
Best,
Andrew
Also make sure your firmware is up to date.
My advice is to return camera. I ignored a small anomaly when I bought a camera and instead of immediately returning took it on a trip for a friend to use. During the trip, failed. Friend used my backup. By the time I got home, return window had closed. Panasonic repaired under warranty and it works great now, but lesson learned: problems don't disappear on their own and if they do an even greater concern.
Thanks for the suggestions!
