You will want a 70-200 2.8 with 2X - light, compact, easy to carry - put it on a monopod.

Longer the better. I rented a 100-400 and took my Tamron 17-50. All the bear photos were from Denali National Park.

Ditto on hypno's response except you can buy the P510 for same money or less, have a lot more telephoto in a smaller package than buying the 18-270, so save the $$ and space and just take the bridge camera.
There have been numerous posts on the Canon SX40, which according to contributors is on par with the 510 for less than $400. Panasonic makes a shorter zoom version FZ150 if memory serves.

There was only one cloud in the sky when I took the bus tour into Denali. Unfortunately, it covered from Anchorage to Prudhoe Bay. :-D

However, the bus driver/guide was kind enough to point to where Denali could be seen had it been clear. Maybe I will get back there one day.

I have sigma 50-500 and love it. It took some getting use to with my Pentax K-7 ( it has a tendence to loss focus but I find I can manully focus very easily with anyways, especialy whenshoting birds nest in heavy folage. If you get on get it early before the trip so you can pratice!

I think they already did, one intelligently, the other not so much. One a valid question, the other a tirade.

What lens would you take to Denali National Park and on an Alaskan cruise? This is for Nikon D200, and D300s.

Hi Jamers: Like MT Shooter has stated You best selection would be a lens for wide angle and another for reach, and the 80-200 for scenics. I've driven the highway from Wasilla to Fairbanks. Lots of places to pull over and some great Mt views. I was able to capture a great shot of a cloudless Mt McKinley on my video camera. When I was showing it to some of the guys that lived there they were suprised, because there is usually always clouds hiding the peak. The funny part I only saw one Moose on that trip as it crossed the road a half mile away. Best of luck on your trip. If you get a chance take the Ideterod (sp) ride just outside Wasilla. This time of year it's mounted on wheels instead of runners.

Jamers,
I have had the 70-200 2.8 with 1.4 tele-superb lens. Have the D300 and they were a great combination. Highly recommend it for the D200 & D300S. Have the Sigma 150-500-very nice reach but no comparison to the 70-200-IMHO. Enjoy the trip, hope to see some images upon your return.

Jamers ... I think most of the responders missed your mode of transportation .... your airline will limit the weight of your baggage ... the stateroom on the cruise ship is small and you will travel on a bus .... limit your gear .... remember ... you will never have the right lens ... just like we always get on the wrong line ... I am going to Eastern Europe for several weeks .... one camera and two lenses ... oh ... and a Coolpix P7100 ... for those times that I can not carry a heavy DSLR .... you cannot always have the right lens ... we just do our best ..

i was saying if i were going id take a wide short tele.
but i..meaning ME..have not dealt with any of the super zooms out there..
we all good now.

Thanks
for your input.

The OP asked for lens recommendations for a particular site. You recommend a lens and then ask what that site is? Sounds like very little value in your recommendation to me.

Be nice.
